    Quarterback for Iowa

So who thinks Meyer will be competing for his starting spot in practice this week? While I can't see Chizik pulling Meyer right before the Iowa game... I certinaly see him doing it for Toledo if he keeps the same **** up as he did tonight. He already got a warning shot fired across his bow late in the game tonight... and if he doesn't work hard in practice we might see a lot more of Austin next week...

    Re: Quarterback for Iowa

    Austen will start at Toledo.

Chizik is building for the future. There's no reason to continue to throw this season away with Bret at the helm. Austen needs to get meaningful snaps as he will be the QB for the next few years, and we're obviously not going anywhere this season.

As good as Bret has been for us......and as bad as I feel seeing a tenured senior riding the pine, it looks like it may be time for just that.

However...the student section chanting "We want Austen" is low class. I hope we don't hear it again. Classless, and it needs to stop.

I hope we see Austen more than one series next week, unless Bret is superman.

But I'm pretty sure Bret will start if Gene let Sandvig return punts again today...

It's no secret this team isn't all that great and to be honest there isn't a lot to play for this year except pride and experience. So bench Meyer, he's making mistakes a freshman and sophomore make, not a 4 year starter. Let Arnaud or Bates get the snaps and the experience so that way in a year or two when ISU is a bowl team again they'll have plenty of experience under their belt. I'd rather lose 24-13 with a Freshman making mistakes and losing the game than 24-13 with a Senior making the same mistakes and contributing to the loss.

    Re: Quarterback for Iowa

I think the team is really high on their young QBs but they're trying to give the veterans all the chances to go out on a good note. They came in here to replace a coach that is loved by the fans and the last thing they want to do is completely over-turn the apple cart and leave a lot of fans ******. I think you'll see Arnaud getting in for a couple drives next week but it'll be the Toledo game before he really starts to take over. This is just my opinion but I think he understands the fans are sensitive right now to all the changes that have taken place and is trying to make sure he does what's best for the program but also the fan-base.

That's just my opinion but you have to remember Arnaud may be the future but he doesn't have the experience to just start against Iowa. Bring him in gradually over a couple of games and then you've given Meyer a chance and you've got your guy for the future.

A program isn't built on one player and it doesn't succeed because of one player, thus a program won't fail if it doesn't get that one player.

    Re: Quarterback for Iowa

He's bound to be noticing his career come full circle... as a freshman competing for his spot with a guy named Austin, and now as a senior it's reverse, he's competing with a freshman named Austin...

Either way. I don't see Chizik fully pulling him as starter - yet. However I do expect to see more of Austin next week (and unfortuantly for Bret, that will probally be to the cheers and chants of the crowd)

I say play the man that gives us the best chance to win, and unfortunately its not 4th year starter at QB.

    Re: Quarterback for Iowa

Here's the rub though. With the brutal stretch of games coming up, do you throw Austen to the wolves and risk damaging his psyche (ala Austin Flynn in '03) or just let Bret ride it out until the KSU, Colorado, Mizzou and Kansas games?
