    08/09 classes

Only 13 left from 08(by my count) and roughly 12-13 from the 09 class as well. My question is whats left of the 2010 class right now? I'm not completely up on the redshirts and who has stayed/left.

Whats interesting was Chizik had to go JUCO crazy in 07, and only landed 1 in 08(Banks?) but that class has scattered like it was a JUCO heavy class.

While it appears ISU is doing better with depth across the board as opposed to the 07-09 seasons, is there still some major pitfalls lurking? Now its obvious the competition is deeper on both lines than ever before, but is there another McCarney-esque cliff lurking like the 2006 season?

I've also notice there's still the sentiment out there that Rhoads has had success because of Chizik players, but by my count only 4 from the 07 class made it to play for Rhoads. About 17 made it from the 2008 class to play for Rhoads in 2009. And Chizik had 8(?) recruits lined up for 2009. All but 1 i believe are still with the program.

By my count Rhoads inherited a whooping 30 players from Gene. Going into this season he still has 21 left.
    1 from 2007 (Osemele)
    13 left from 2008
    7 left from 2009

    Re: 08/09 classes

I'll add that the good news of the 09 class is that it looks to have about 10 starters and a couple more contributors from it. Half of it will be making a mark on the field this year.

Browsing through some older classes(05/06) it seemed to have only half of that production from guys later in their careers.

    Re: 08/09 classes

The '10 class signed 28 players. It has lost:

    Adrian Bennett LB
    TJ McCullough ATH
    Dentrell Pate LB
    Jevoury Wedderburn ATH

I think McCullough & Wedderburn were both sign and place players though.

I think Pate and Wedderburn were those guys but I don't know about McCullough. I thought I remembered him not making it kind of a surprise.

You're right, it was Pate & Wedderburn. They just kind of popped up as surprise commitments on signing day. Anyone know if they're actually planning on ending up at ISU?

    Re: 08/09 classes

    Thanks guys.
So we're looking at about 50 guys from 2008-2010, and then Rhoads and the staff figuring out who of the 2011 class will see the field. Unfortunately that means total scholarship bodies is lurking around 75-77. But opens up scholarships for another full class next February.

Except we only lose 14 guys, maybe less, so that may limit us a little.

    Re: 08/09 classes

I'm pretty sure we were right at 85 scholarship players if everyone in '11 made it in. We lost Smith and I think we're still waiting on Simon. So we have 83 total (by my counting). Our class will be as big as the senior class is this year + other deflections. I think it will be around 16-20.

I sorta forgot the outgoing class will be kind of small. It's actually about on par with a lot of recent small SR classes at ISU though.

I hope you're right and the program is around 83. I'm not hoping for some mass exodus, but I feel Rhoads and the staff are really starting to hit their stride in recruiting. With that said, I'm hoping they don't get saddled with too small of a class in 2012.

Based on the diminutive numbers of 09 players left, it may set up ISU to have another small class in 2013. With that in mind its probably crucial that 10 and 11 classes really come through because not a lot of help(in terms of numbers) is on the way.

I count 18 scholarship seniors for 2011. Add the loss of any attrition from the other classes like LB Smith and QB Capello and it will easily be another 25 - 30 sized class.

Micheal Romney is the only one from the roster below that I don't think is on scholarship:

Benton, Ter'Ran DB 6-0 208 Sr. Arlington, Texas (Summit)
82 Branderhorst, Reid TE 6-4 242 Sr. Fort Dodge, Iowa (Simpson) (Fort Dodge)
6 Darks, Darius WR 6-1 189 Sr. Austin, Texas (Connally)
25 Guyer, Zach PK 6-3 195 Sr. Urbandale, Iowa (Johnston)
81 Howard, Ricky TE 6-3 255 Sr. Hesperia, Calif. (Chaffey College) (Hesperia)
23 Johnson, Leonard DB 5-10 202 Sr. Clearwater, Fla. (Largo)

    Re: 08/09 classes

Looking at ShopTalk's list. There 4-5 guys that really haven't had a role at all. I'm sure you'll find that in just about any class, but the fact that its less than a quarter is encouraging.

I think Young has at least seen the field in mop up duty. Not sure about Brooks, but overall not a factor so far. Obviously the 2 TE's as well. Franklin and Hammerschmidt took care of that.

I'll have to investigate the junior class and see who has been a factor from there.

One of the perils of college football... the yearly turnover and how it can decimate one unit or the other.. I mostly fear the loses on defense heading into 2012.

The defense really needs to step up and win a couple games that people don't think ISU is capable of this season and get to a bowl game. 2012 looks like the year the offense is going to have to be really good if ISU wants to compete.

If Jantz (or Tiller) along with Horne are legit players in 2012, and Shontrelle turns into a play-maker it may be in reach.
