Outland, Bednarik, and Thorpe watch lists

After finding out that Iowa State had a player on the Outland Trophy watch list (OT Kelechi Osemele), the Bednarik watch list (LB Jake Knott), and the Thorpe Award watch list (CB Leonard Johnson), I thought I would check to see the other schools that have a player on all three lists. There are 19 schools; however, five of those schools have the same player on both the Bednarik and Thorpe watch lists.

Only 14 schools have different players on all three lists. As mentioned, Iowa State is one. The others are: Miami, Alabama, Nebraska, Florida, Texas, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Stanford, Boise State, Northwestern, Florida State, Michigan State, and Notre Dame. Pretty elite company for the Cyclones.

As a note, the five schools that almost made the list, but had the same player on the Bednarik and Thorpe watch lists were: Georgia, USC, West Virginia, Tennessee, and Oklahoma. Not exactly bad company, either.

Iowa State is the only Big 12 team that has a different player on all three lists.

Re: Outland, Bednarik, and Thorpe watch lists

While that is good news compared to how many we would normally have on these lists, this is basically just spinning it in Iowa State's favor by picking only 3 watch lists out of the 8 or so that are out there. Of all the award watch lists we have a total of 3 guys on them. In the Big Ten alone 8 teams have more players on the watch lists then we do. Northwestern even has twice as many players on watch lists as we do.

Yikes! I didn't realize Texas actually accepted that invite to the Pac-10!

In seriousness, that's pretty cool. Those are schools that recruit excellent talent, so it's good to be seen on that list with them.

When was the last time Iowa State had 3 different players on award watch lists? That supports Rhoads' claim that this is his most talented team yet. We've got more going for us than many people think.

Re: Outland, Bednarik, and Thorpe watch lists

You could argue that Klein should have been an outside candidate for the Bednarik award and KVDK should be mentioned for the Ray Guy award in future years if he can follow up his solid frosh season.

Re: Outland, Bednarik, and Thorpe watch lists

These watch lists are nice and all, but the fact that ISU has 3 players even mentioned at least tells me the level of ability on the field is increasing.

Hopefully its not long before ISU can field a team with 3 or 4 standout players on each side of the ball.
