Phil Steele college FB comments on 810

    - Alabama #1 (10 returning starters on defense; studs replacing QB & RB; best O line in country; Chris Carter's son top WR; runs the table; I think he said that will make 6 consecutive SEC NC's)

    - Boise State will finish regular season undefeated; qualify for BCS bowl

    - Notre Dame, Georgia & VA Tech "surprise teams" with NC potential. Notre Dame only underdog game will be against Stanford.

    - #2 OU wins B12. Only "tough" game at OSU. 16 returning starters. #1 rated offense in country.

    - Texas A&M #2 in B12. Will play in BCS game.

    - OSU plays brutal schedule.

    - Texas will resemble 2008 & 2009 teams. Big bounce back from last year. Stud true freshman RB Malcolm Brown will carry offense. Capable of double digit wins.

    - MU #5 in B12. Solid QB James Franklin. Gabbert only threw 16 TD's last year. Franklin could outperform Gabbert. Lose 6 of top 9 tacklers. Defense will take step back. Much tougher schedule this year.

    - KSU #6 in B12. Snyder upgrading talent quickly. Best defense they've had in years. Transfers will have big impact. Best team they've had in years.

    - KU & ISU tied for last in B12. KU has 15 returning starters. Should be improved from last year. KU will be underdogs against ISU.

    - ISU. 9th most experienced team in B12. 104th most experienced team in NCAA. Only 12 returning starters... fewest in league. Only expects 3 wins. Had really good things to say about Paul Rhoads.

    - Nebraska best team in B10. Doesn't expect any B10 teams ranked in top 10 at end of year.

    - Expects Urban Meyer to end up at Ohio State.

Effing Notre Dame. They are going 9-3 at best and they play a junk schedule. What makes him think they are going to be good? Nebraska won't be the best team in the Big Ten either IMO. Wisconsin will rock them.

Brian Kelly is a great head coach. He has a history of turning programs around unlike Weiss and Willingham. Weiss left them with some nice talent. I wouldn't be surprised to see them going 10-2 or better. Talent is there

Phil Steele is a guy I respect for his insight. However I can't buy his magazine anymore because half of it is braggadocio about his predictions from the year before.

3-9, honestly, is a fair and unbiased prediction for this team. UNI, Kansas, and one more. I'm not saying I agree with it (I don't) but I fully recognize that I have the cardinal and gold blinders on.

In my opinion, 3-9 is probably a worst case scenario. I think 5 wins is a lot more likely and 6 would constitute an outstanding year.

He raved about ND's talent. Also thinks Kelly is one of best coaches in the game.

Damn, I really hate to hear that about KSU. IMO, KSU is one of the teams that we need to consistently beat in the new and improved Big 12. Statements like this do not give me warm and fuzzies that we will be doing that any time soon.

What worries me is what appear to be the toss up games are all on the road (Baylor, MU, Tech, KSU). Iowa, Texas, A&M, OSU all at home... but the last three are apparently loaded and Iowa is Iowa.

I don't disagree, but from an outsider's perspective, ISU is favored in 2 games. 3-9 probably looks like the most likely outcome with that in mind, and that's giving the Cyclones an upset somewhere along the way.

I was really surprised to hear that they will rely heavily on transfers.

I wouldn't worry so much about KSU going forward. Skelator can't keep going forever, and I haven't seen anyone else have success at KSU.

I searched but couldn't find Phil's predictions for 2009 and 2010 for ISU. Anyone know what they were?

Re: Phil Steele college FB comments on 810

Without a returning starting QB and RB it would be hard to justify more wins. I feel like we will be better, but in Phil Steele's situation you cannot go on faith alone. As a Cyclone fan I have a ton of faith in Rhoads and do think our defense will be salty.

The last two are bold but A&M is stacked with, now, upperclassmen. Sherman started 18 true freshmen in 2008. They will be #2 in the Big 12 no question in my mind.
