    Boater and Fisherman input needed

Next year the Army Corps of Energeers will put into place a rule forcing all boaters on Redrock to wear a lifejacket. If we want to try to stop this we need to go to their site and tell them that we are adults and it is our choice to wear or not wear lifejackets on boats. Once they get this rule into place at a few lakes it wont take long for it to be in place on other lakes.

I'm going to sound like a troll, but hang on to the end.

I think this is a great idea. As a resident near the Coralville Reservoir, I get to pay extra taxes to the Johnson County Sherriff to fish the lake whores out of the Res when they don't want to wear life jackets over their SUPER sexy new hawkeye bikini's.

Until we remove the seat belt laws, and shut up the people howling for a helmet law, I say we should all face the consequences of the nanny state.

End point, need to decide whether we're going to be a country with no risks, or a country with freedom, and argue that point, not individual laws.

This will be the the quickest way to chase away recreational boating and cause a huge impact on the economies that surround the recreational areas. I know Clear Lake is heavily used by Minnesota residence. If Clear Lake had this rule, they would find other places to play. Are they going to require every swimmer to wear a PDF? There are more people drowning at the beaches than there are in boats.

Not too far off....Over here, a mom took her kid swimming in a river earlier this year (and remember, rivers high....etc.) Kid gets taken away by current, random stranger guy jumps in to save him, kid lives, guy drowns. Shortly after, people arguing for swimmers to be banned form the river. My heart goes out to the random stranger guy's family, but it's the mom's fault, not society.

Maybe the Corps would be better off spending their time on more important matters...like why they can't properly maintain water levels to prevent wide spread flooding every year.

It's not just rivers either. Three weeks ago a 17 year old drowns in Clear Lake 200 feet from shore straight out from the main boat ramp. Two kids go out too far, one can't get back, they pull him off the bottom of the lake 4 hours later.

I don't have a problem requiring minors/ 16 under to wear them. You have to protect some kids from their stupid drunk parents. But adults should have them in reach or as seat bottoms, not required to wear.

I don't own a boat and rarely have the opportunity to be on one, but I have seen some VERY low profile, minimally-intrusive PFD's around lately. I can't imagine they get in the way too much.

    This I agree with.
I don't go boating very much, maybe once or twice a year. But, I couldn't imagine wearing a life jacket all the time on a boat, as an adult. If the must require a law like this, maybe make it for minors only.

Re: Boater and Fisherman input needed

I own a boat and this will absolutely kill the boating in Iowa. I will sell my boat or move to another state where I can boat without having to wear a lifejacket. I don't have enough time here to blow holes into this topic but just shows another stupid idea not really thought through by our beloved government spending our tax dollars.

    Enough said!

Lol you would move in order to not wear a life jacket? Hilarious.

This is a horrible rule. The Corp is over stepping their bounds.

I'd like to see the statistics on drownings from a boat vs swimming from beach.
