    First Lab-Made Human Organ Implanted

For the first time, a patient has received a synthetic windpipe that was created in a lab with the patient's own stem cells and without using human donor tissue, researchers said Thursday.
Previous lab-generated transplants either used a segment of donor windpipe or involved tissue only, not an organ.
In a laboratory in London, scientists created a trachea, which is a tube-like airway that connects at the voice box and branches into both lungs.
On June 9, doctors implanted this synthetic windpipe into a 36-year-old man with late-stage tracheal cancer at Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm. The patient is doing well and is expected to be released from the hospital Friday, said Dr. Paolo Macchiarini, professor of regenerative medicine there.

Creepy and cool all at once. You know some dude in some lab below ground is making something crazier.

about growing synthetic organs in general or about this windpipe in particular?

Re: First Lab-Made Human Organ Implanted

This is the sort of thing that makes these interesting times. Just think we humans were sawing off limbs to treat bullet wounds less then 200 years ago, now this. Science and technology have transformed us as a species (for better and worse) but this sort of thing is kinda cool. I have seen some things on other medical breakthroughs and such that are the first steps into next evolution in areas such as artificial limbs.

BBC NEWS | Health | 'Bionic' limb breakthrough made

or in the areas like regeneration like mentioned in the OPs linked article. Could this be a way to immortality? What ethical questions does this bring up? Needless to say I'm sure there is a Sci-Fi novel from 30 years ago that has already asked all of those questions. (Old Man's War by: John Scalzi uses the grown body concept)

I am more impressed that they traveled to the future to perform the procedure.
