    Adding classes that are "full"

I am trying to pick up a class and I get this message after attempting to add it "Your request cannot be processed. Seats in this section are reserved for new freshmen through July 6, 2011." So does this mean that seats will be available after July 6th at midnight? I would like to know what time because I want to snag a seat right away when they are unlocked. Any help is appreciated!

That or talk to an advisor about a force request if it fills.

You can always try an add slip.

I'm just hoping for a HerkyKiller moment with this, but I don't think he has the fire for it.

I may call the registrar tomorrow and see if it is possible if they can add me. I was originally in another section but the instructor resigned so now I am no longer in that class.

Registrar probably won't do much for you without an advisor involved. Advisors really can do a lot of things behind the scenes.

What is funny is I don't have an advisor anymore, he also resigned. Also, the class is not a part of my college. I am taking the class for a humanities requirement. I don't think your advisor can sign you into other college's classes.

Talk to an advisor or department chair?

The add slip seems like a good route to me. I'm not sure, but I would expect the registrar to direct you back to your department.

Re: Adding classes that are "full"

Get in contact with the department that has the class you are trying to get into. They can usually either tell you when more spots will open up or will say to get an add slip from your adviser/department chair and they will sign you into it.

Re: Adding classes that are "full"

There are some ways around a class limit: one, you can approach the prof who can admit someone over and above the advertised limit. Two, you can get on an add-list in case someone already enrolled decides to drop. Some students enroll for more classes than they intend to take and drop the one or ones that don't really appeal to them. Three, if there is enough pressure, the dept. chair can raise the class limit, but that might only happen at the last minute. Four, you can hope for a new section to be added, but I would not count on that happening these days because money for new sections--and hence perhaps a new temporary hire--is mighty scarce. Good luck.

Re: Adding classes that are "full"

How long do you have into the semester to change classes? I used to sign up for what I could get, and then switch up my classes a week or so into the semester...it seemed like I could get any class/time that I wanted that way. The profs claimed I would be behind, but it's really wasn't a big deal.

Re: Adding classes that are "full"

Well, I have been away from campus for a few years, so I don't know for sure how long you can drop and add, but bear in mind that there are probably a limited number of drops that you are allowed; at least that is what used to be true. Also, many profs are not going to let you add their class if you are, say, three or four weeks into the semester. They normally don't have to let you in at any old time.
