Master of the Butter Sculpture Dies
    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/28/us/28lyon.html?hp

    RIP.

She learned how to sculpt from Christian Petersen, who did many of the sculptures on campus.

Ms. Lyon studied animal science at Iowa State University in the late 1940s, when the American sculptor Christian Petersen was an artist in residence there. His encouragement, after seeing an ice sculpture she made for a campus winter festival, led her to take several of his studio classes before graduating in 1951.

She got the first opportunity to use her training in 1960, when she became the official sculptor of the Butter Cow, a life-size statue that had been the dairy industry’s symbol at the Iowa State Fair since 1911. Another sculptor had the job at the time, but Ms. Lyon convinced fair officials that she could do it better. . . .
Her uncle Phil Stong wrote the book State Fair, which 3 movies were made based on. The 1st featured Will Rogers, the 2nd was the first Broadway musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein (Oklahoma was their second). In the film version, the son, Wayne, was an ISU student or at least wore a cardinal sweater with a gold I. The 3rd featured Ann Margaret and Pat Boone and was moved to Texas. I was actually hung up, too sick to travel, Christmas Eve one year in New York and the local PBS station showed the 1st, Depression era version that evening - pretty cool, filmed on the fair grounds with all the old buildings and a big audience on quite possibly the biggest PBS station in the country. Films based in New York from the same era, to a bit later, is what they usually showed.

The photo and article were on the main NY Times page, right at the top, center, but aren't now.
