Wally Burnham in "Big XII's Top Defensive Coaches"

Big 12 has plenty of defensive minds - Sports | The Columbia Daily Tribune - Columbia, Missouri

Nothing new, but it's always nice to see Cyclones mentioned in these kinds of articles.

Seems like the author was more concerned with individual development rather than unit performance.

    Paul Rhoads' players never quit.

We always seem to have areas of the defense that are great but the other areas are way behind average. Our linebacker play is set, I worry about the secondary that got embarrassed too many times over the top. McNutt is licking his chops to play us again.

If our D-line can get some pressure consistently our DB's will look like all-pro's. Not to excuse their play last year but pressure up front is key to a good secondary. And if you watched last year you know our line couldn't generate that. When Lattimer was tearing up TX that secondary looked a lot better!

I don't really remember getting burned deep a lot last year. Nothing like when Bolt was here.

    I'm on Twitter too: Tre4ISU

    Or so I have read.

Getting burned deep wasn't the issue last year. Instead of giving up a 50 yard pass, we gave up 2 25 yard passes behind the linebackers/dbacks and in front of the safeties.

Re: Wally Burnham in "Big XII's Top Defensive Coaches"

You can only expect a secondary to lock down receivers for so long before they somehow get open. You have to put pressure on the QB, or he's got all day to go through his receivers, just waiting for one of his guys to make a play.

Line play is the most efficient and effective way to improve a football team on both sides of the ball. Giving your running backs bigger holes to run through and your quarterbacks more time to throw than the other guys have can overcome disadvantages in athleticism at other positions. If the Ends can put pressure on like it looks like they should between Lattimer, Maggitt, Neal, and maybe even Irving, and the DT's can clog up some holes up the middle, that makes the jobs of the other defenders much easier.

2010 NCAA Division I-A College Football Team Statistics Leaders for Defense - ESPN

Completely correct. 11 sacks as a team last year. 3 teams in the nation had a worse pass rush than us last year. Minnesota, New Mexico State, and Eastern Michigan.

There were 10 individual players with 11.0 sacks or more last year in the NCAA.

    That needs to change

And I think it will. Not only are we better and deeper at DE this year, but we've been hearing that we're going to be blitzing more. If you have a problem, get your best players on the field to help fix it. Should be fun to watch.
