Re: Rick Ankiel Used HGH in 2004

Yeah, that dampens my enthusiasm for him. I was rooting for the kid, even though I'm not a Cards fan. Looks like nothing will happen to him, except in the court of public opinion. I found it comical that the article says that MLB will ask him if he used HGH after it was banned. What do they expect he would say to that?

Re: Rick Ankiel Used HGH in 2004

He would have broken the law, but none of baseball's rules at the time.

Unlike most drugs, federal law bans the use of HGH for off-label purposes: Physicians can distribute growth hormone only in connection with either treatment of a disease or another medical condition authorized by the Secretary of Health and Human Services. "You need a bona fide doctor-patient relationship and a bona fide disease to distribute growth hormone," Wadler said.

Kind of funny how in today's society, any particular sport's rules would seem to supercede laws, isn't it?

I always get a kick out of the question, especially when posed by lawmakers - "what is being done by pro baseball/football/basketball to discourage the use of illegal drugs?"

Here's concept - it's against the law. Start prosecuting some of these athletes and you might see some reductions when players are faced with REAL consequences. And not just a 3 game suspension and a 100,000 fine for a guy making 10M.

I think possession of steroids or HGH is basically just a ticket, the only way you would be able to 'prosecute' is if you went after the distributors and 19-20 times the distributor is a doctor, like the Carolina Panthers doctor... So maybe media needs to crack down on the medical profession...

At that time it was recommended by a lot of Dr's to help in rehab. Not trying to justify either side just a statement.

Not if it was prescribed by a doctor (which is likely what happened).

Re: Rick Ankiel Bought HGH in 2004

Truth be told...if we knew of every player today that was "stretching" their workout routine by using some sort of chemical assistance (legal or illegal, detectible or not dectible by testing) we would have a pretty long list. There is just so much money out there in today's contracts that a significant number of players are willing to "do what it takes" to be the best they can be.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Ankiel was recovering from TWO surgeries in 2004... I can't see it being out of the ordinary to have been perscribed HGH at that time...

I'm pretty sure "recovery from surgery" is not a use approved by the FDA. You need to have a pretty specific disease.

This is why I get a little irked that people are always on Bonds case. He's never been tested positive but even if he did do them you don't think some of the pitchers he hit those homers off of were juicing or other players in MLB were doing the same thing? I'm not a Bonds fan but the whole * crap gets annoying. Just because he broke a record and someone else hasn't is the main reason why he gets such a hard time.
