    Cell Phone Plans

Does anybody have experience with track phones or cell phones where you buy the minutes ahead of time and you don't have a monthly cost?

Reason I ask, I have a really old(but really cheap) single line plan through US Cellular that I just hate to let go of. My wife has a cell phone on her brothers plan through Verizon that's a good price, but his kids are getting big enough that they need the extra line.

My wife doesn't really use her phone a lot and a 75 minutes of usage per month would probably be a lot for her.

We haven't jumped on the data plan band wagon and our old dumb phones satisfy our needs. Any input you have would be appreciated.

    Re: Cell Phone Plans

I'm pretty much in the same boat. Just have one dumb phone and would want another for my wife. We rarely use more than 200 min./mo., so would love to be able to match our current bill ($40-45/mo.) but with an additional phone...

I've used Virgin Mobile for Broadband access- it's a pay-as-you-go service, no contract, only pay for the months that you use it. It works just fine. I'd expect their pay-as-you-go cell phone service to be the same. Good Luck!

    Re: Cell Phone Plans

We have tmobile prepaid. Minutes are as low as $.10 per minute. After you've purchased $100 of time, all future airtime purchases expire in a year and the minimum purchase is $10. As a result, after the initial phone + $100 airtime purchase you only have to buy a minimum of $10 of airtime per year. Obviously if you use the phone often enough you'll have to buy minutes more often that that, but it's by far the best deal for people who use their phone very little.

Thanks! Sounds exactly what we're looking for. Do you have voice mail and how is coverage?

    Re: Cell Phone Plans

Voicemail is included. I don't believe minutes are used when someone leaves you a voicemail, but it does cost minutes to call your voicemail to listen.

I've never really had coverage issues. Depending on where you live, you might not be able to get a local number if that's an issue. A lot of T-Mobile's coverage in Iowa is actually iWireless, and if you live in one of those areas then you can't get a local number when you activate. However, you can always port a local (or non-local) number in if you have one with another carrier.
