More investigation into Armstrong and cycling

FBI wants tape of cyclists Tyler Hamilton-Lance Armstrong meeting - More Sports - SI.com

I found this interesting that the FBI is investigating doping in professional cycling and it looks like, Lance Armstrong and his prior teammates.

I just really hope that nothing comes of this and that Armstrong won his 7 Tours clean. It would be a huge hit to cycling and sports in general to have one of US sports hero get caught for taking drugs to win.

Would it really be that big of a hit? It's no secret that cycling was absolutely full of dopers during Lance's tenure. Combine that with the accounts from Landis, Hamilton, and Hincapie, and it would almost be more of a shock to me if he was actually clean.

It would be a huge hit because Armstrong is still considered clean when he won his 7 Tours and he is still being celebrated as one of the greatest athletes of all time and still being celebrated as sports hero.

If it comes out that he was dirty, this would be 10x worse than the BALCO scandel with baseball and football.

Possibly on a world level. I guess I don't know how popular cycling is overseas, but nationally, it doesn't rank anywhere near baseball or football. It would be a story, no doubt, but I think you overestimate the number of Americans who believe that Lance is clean. That number has been dwindling rapidly in recent years.

Doesn't most of Europe already think Lance is a cheater? I seem to remember the French being pretty convinced of it.

Here's an interesting opinion piece on the perception of Armstrong and his legacy. Many people still view him differently than other athletes who have used or alleged to have used performance enhancing drugs.

The only people who think he's clean are Americans. And I have a feeling they (we) are wrong.

He is going down no doubt about it. The only difference between Lance and Bonds is that Bonds is an ***...that is it.

Actually, by all accounts, Lance is a pretty big arse himself.

If you want to be correct about your statement, the only difference between Lance and Bonds is Lance is a cancer survivor, so he garners a lot of public sympathy, so much so that people are willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Re: More investigation into Armstrong and cycling

If interested in the best information out there that I have found, go to the library and read the May 2011 issue of Bicycling. Lots of info gathered on Lance and his era. There is a graph called, The Ugly Truth on page 52 that is mind blowing really. Basically Lance was king during one of the dirtiest if you will, doping eras of bicycling. Most of the top 10 ten finishers when Lance was on the podium were some how directly and indirectly connected to doping...fired for doping, kicked out for doping....at some point.

I am not saying he did, but......he was a stud in an era that his competition was doping heavy, some were being caught while others were not, yet he won.

To bad his because he has done a lot of good too.

That's far beside the point, now. I don't think anyone is out on a crusade to be named the rightful 2004 Tour De France winner.

Sorry, I still believe in the little thing of "innocent until proven guilty". Right now it is a lot of people that were caught all now blaming Armstrong and his doctors for giving them drugs.

I will believe he did not dope until either:
    a.) he admits it
b.) there is proof that he did it and not hearsay

    Until then....
