Maytag Dairy Farms is scheduled to unveil its first non-cheese food product this weekend at Winefest Des Moines.

The product — Homegrown Popcorn — will be served at Friday’s Sips in the City and Saturday’s Grand Tasting, Myrna Ver Ploeg, the farm’s president, said.

“We purposely selected Des Moines because it has really become a city of food and Winefest because it attracts a lot of people with an educated palate,” she said.

Made with corn grown on Maytag’s farm, the popcorn has only been tasted up to this point by Maytag employees, Ver Ploeg said, adding that the product will be available to the public in July at Maytag Dairy Farms, 2282 E. Eighth St. N., Newton, and online at www.maytagdairyfarms.com for a price yet to be determined.

“Since this is our first year we only have a small amount right now,” Ver Ploeg said. “We’ll have another harvest in the fall and we’ll be able to sell more in time for Christmas.”

At present, the plan is to sell canisters of plain, unpopped popcorn. But in the future the farm’s blue and cheddar cheeses are likely to be incorporated into the product, she said.

Popular with food enthusiasts nationwide for its blue cheese in particular, Maytag Dairy Farms produced its first wheel of cheese on Oct. 11, 1941. Since then, it has sold only cheese.
