    Direction of ISU Athletics

There have been a lot of people on this board in years past complaining about JP or our football program or basketball program (I've even heard people complain about our tennis program), I'm interested about what people currently think about the direction of ISU athletics.

Just to keep in mind here is a list of negatives and positives.

    Negatives
-Still little success in football and basketball
-Coaches salaries near the bottom of Big 12
-Major debt to build new facilities
-Small turnouts for football and other sports
    -Problems with the Big 12

    Positives
    -Major improvements in facilities
    -Improved APR and graduation rate
-Bold plan for future facility improvements
    -Better fan interaction
-Increased revenue from the Big 12

I think a hybrid of the first two. Moving in the right direction, but still need a lot of work yet.

Which is why I chose the second option instead of the first. We definitely are headed in the right direction, but ISU has a long ways to go. Probably will always have a long ways to go, but as long as ISU is always attempting to get there, I'll be satisfied.

Maybe the questions should read do you think that ISU is doing the best they can with what we have and how far we have to go.

    Re: Direction of ISU Athletics

Agree with both of you. Absolutely think we're headed in the right direction. I think that if football and basketball improve, the rest of the department will follow naturally. And I definitely think that those two sports are headed up. But I know that we have a long way to go. We are thought of as a bottom-tier BCS team, a cellar dweller of the Big 12. That needs to change with sustained results.

I just remember how I felt with Bruce Van De Velde and I have more appreciation for Pollard.

Plus, in my personal interactions with Pollard he seems to genuinely care about the direction of ISU (as opposed to just improving his personal resume) and he treasures fan input because it means everyone is actively engaged.

    Re: Direction of ISU Athletics

To me, I'm one of the biggest supporters of JP there is. I relish many memories of "debating" with MontyBurns about JP, however, there seems to be a positive perception right now I can't completely explain.

I do think the new scoreboard made people happier than any other project to date. However, Football has been to one bowl game (that most of the nation laughed at) since 2005 and again we were left looking at missed opportunities and a couple of games where our score read 0 from beginning to end.

On the basketball side, we seem to be getting better players, however, basketball hasn't done anything since 2004. We had an assistant coach arrested for DUI just a few days after being hired and what was thought to be one of our best players was dismissed from the team.

I'm a firm supporter of JP and CPR and I like FH and I want him to successful; but there seems to be a lot of blind optimism right now for the entire athletic program.

Yea, probably somewhere between the first two options. I think most aspects are improving in general, but there are definitely some areas that are making bigger strides than others. You don't really get the feeling right now that any programs are going to backslide this year from what they acheived last year and some definitely seem poised to make major improvements.

    Re: Direction of ISU Athletics

I went with the second one, mainly because I feel like ISU still needs a lot of work to get where they are truly competitive in the B12 in FB and MBB. Some of our other programs are competing at a very high level but when it comes down to it FB and MBB are really the measuring sticks that people look at when evaluating an ADept.

Football- I love CPR, I love his passion and I think that most players would run through a wall for him. Wally is a stud and has done incredible things with the defense and we can only hope that Herman's offense will start to click. If not I hope the CPR can make the needed changes to get ISU back to bowl games. New realignment will make it tougher than the old North/South.

MBB- Obviously any logical fan would feel that last year was a step in the right direction and I would say that we overacheived (competiton wise not neccesarily on our record) because we were competitive in the majority of our gamese. I think that fans have high expectations this coming year and in order for this season to be a "success" some kind of post season run is needed. This may or may not be fair in yr 2 of CFH but I think thats how people feel.

WBB- Goes without saying Fen is the man and has been a cornerstone for ISU.

Wrestling- KJ had to deal with a very young team and defect because of Cael leaving. Has some good young talent on the roster and coming in. I think he is probably 2-3 yrs from getting ISU back to where it was when Cael left.

VB- Again another great tradition being built at ISU.

“It’s beyond pride. It’s a restored trust. There’s a confidence again, a passion that teeters on swagger. More than anything, (Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads) has restored the Iowa State “it” factor, the steadfast belief that it is great to be a Cyclone...the man’s enthusiasm is genuine to the core...”
    – columnist Sean Keeler, Des Moines Register

Is ISU moving in the right direction? Absolutely. I've never been this excited about Cyclone sports in June.

Too many false starts, to give me hope of improvement, nothing seems sustained

    Re: Direction of ISU Athletics

To expand a bit on my earlier post:

I don't know if Coach Rhoads will be able to do a ton with the football program. I think we'll be a program that floats around the .500 mark. We'll very occasionally have a 9-4 year and we'll also occasionally have a 4-8 year. I expect to see a lot of 5-7, 6-6, and 7-5 years.

Basketball is a much easier program for us to compete in and into the future I expect to see postseason play 4 out of 5 years and at least 2 of them NCAA tournament appearances. Sprinkle in a Sweet 16 every few years and I'd consider that very successful.

Wrestling I know next to nothing besides the fact that the program is really struggling right now.

Does anything really need to be said about Bill's program?

Volleyball I think has a big opportunity to make itself the best program in the Big 12. Texas is a hell of a program but in no way insurmountable. It'd be great even if we could solidify as #2 behind Texas and not drop multiple matches every year we have no business losing.

Considering you've only been around here for a little over a year, you have no idea how many idiots wanted JP ****-canned a few years back (particularly during the Chizik mess and the McDermott extension)...
