Should I go on a "starvation diet" to lose weight?

I have come to realize that I am more than a bit overweight, and I have a class reunion coming up. I would like to lose a bunch of weight as quickly as possible. How should I go about this? Should I go on a "starvation diet"?

do insanity. 60 day program. you'll lose a ton of weight and get real fit.
you could also do p90x but it is a 90 day program.

Starvation diet will not work. Try working out. Burn more calories than you eat and you will lose weight.

You will lose some pounds if you try the starvation diet just not any fat and the instant u start to eat the normal amounts of food the weight will file right back on faster than before.

You may lose the weight in the short term, but you will gain it all back and more. The last thing you want to do is starve your body. Count calories, and actually pay attention to how many calories you take in daily, and then add exercise. You can't lose it all on diet or exercise alone, there has to be a balance.

Re: Should I go on a "starvation diet" to lose weight?

I went on a 1000 calorie diet. I ate a lot of small meals every 2 hours and managed to lose quite a bit of weight in 30 days. It did not last though. I gained it all back because it wasn't a diet I could sustain. Ive now just watched what I ate and really tried to just leave some food left and not finish everything and have slowly lost almost the same amount that I did in that quick fix. This I can sustain. Check your weight and record what you eat. Get on livestrong or dailyplate or something like that. Just tracking what you eat will make a ton of difference. And then really just go do something. Find an activity that will burn some weight for you. Find something you find fun and you won't mind "working out". Beats a treadmill. If you have a ymca membership i'll play some raquetball with you if you are in the DSM area. Don't worry I am not good.

Re: Should I go on a "starvation diet" to lose weight?

Eat a balance of carbs (with nutritional value), protein (lean), and healthy fat. It is vital that you eat breakfast, as this gets your metabolism back up after sleeping. I have lost 25 pounds since March doing this. You also need to do some exercise. I was going to a gymn and using cardio equipt. Now I am so busy mowing, gardening, and such that I get as good a workout, exercise wise, as I did. I still am losing weight. I generally eat 4-6 times a day, eating only 300-400 calories at a time. I almost never feel hungry. My weight has come off my face and neck, but mostly from my waist. My pants that were tight now fall to my feet when I take my belt off, and soon I will have to drop down a couple sizes.

Re: Should I go on a "starvation diet" to lose weight?

Starvation diet will cause your body to use your current muscle mass for energy because you aren't supplying it with enough. This will likely cause your metabolic rate to decrease. Due to this, once you go back to eating normal, you will put any weight you lost back on in a hurry.

Also, a starvation diet will simply make you a smaller version of what you currently are, your body composition will likely remain the same.

No. Starving yourself is a bad idea if you're looking to lose weight. Fat will be the last thing to get burned. What weight you do lose, will just be gained right back, and probably more.
Remember, your body is very smart. If you start starving yourself, your bodies metabolism will slow down and will start storing more calories for survival.

You need to do what other have already said. Eat 5-6 small meals throughout the day. The biggest meal should be breakfast. Eat foods with a low glycemic index value, which are food that will make you feel fuller, longer. Partner that with some cardio and resistance exercise. Cardio to burn some calories and resistance exercise to build some muscle mass (which in turn will increase you metabolism). The higher your metabolism, the more calories you will burn by just sitting on the couch or sleeping.

go zero carb ............. eat all the fat and protein you want BUT NO CARBS ............ the weight flies off. Read the labels carefully. No Carbs of ANY KIND.

The "Atkins Diet" is not a good longterm strategy. Just eat less calories, very simple.
