Per Keith Murphy: John Meeks is a Cyclone

Per WHO-TV Sports Director Keith Murphy's Twitter:
Undefeated, 3 time state wrestling champion John Meeks of DM Roosevelt tells me he changed commitment from Neb to Iowa State.

Meeks: "I have decided to stay close to home where I have strong family support and a team of trainers that I am close to. I will be attending Iowa State University under Coach Jackson."

Wow, that's a nice pickup! Based on what his family was supposedly looking for, I'm guessing it cost us a full ride, or very close to it, but we needed an in-state blue chipper. I hope his high school success carries over to ISU.

What is typical for a wrestling scholarship? guess I've only ever looked at Football, MBB, and WBB where you can just assume scholarship=full ride.

    I'm curious about this, too.

Well, you only get 9.9 scholarships to divide among the entire roster -- and I'd guess that at least 20 guys (a "two-deep", if you will) have some sort of aid.

Interesting. Is that an NCAA rule, or just what ISU's athletic budget allows?

There are 9.9 schollarships to be spread throughout the wrestling program, so a full ride for 4 years is typically reserved for the elite of the elite. No one ever really knows for sure how much a kid is getting except for him and his family, but I believe it is fairly common for kids that come in on full rides as freshman to give up some in later years for the betterment of the team.

The rumors said that Meeks' dad was looking for a full ride and the kid could fill a hole for us at 133/141 so my guess is that he is at least starting off on a full ride, but don't confuse my guesses with anything close to the facts.

NCAA mandate. 9.9 is the max and some programs allow for less.

This kid is legit. After a redshirt year, i could see him being a four-year starter.

NCAA rule. FB and MBB are the only men's sports that are "headcount" in terms of scholarships. All of the rest are partials/percentages.

    Cross Country/Track and Field .................. 12.6
    Fencing ........................................................ 4.5
    Golf ............................................................. 4.5
    Gymnastics ................................................... 6.3
    Lacrosse ...................................................... 12.6
    Rifle ............................................................. 3.6
    Skiing ........................................................... 6.3
    Soccer ........................................................... 9.9
    Swimming and Diving ................................. 9.9
    Tennis .......................................................... 4.5
    Volleyball ..................................................... 4.5
    Water Polo ................................................... 4.5
    Wrestling ...................................................... 9.9
Baseball (11.7) and ice hockey (18.0) are also partials, but are listed a little differently in the NCAA manual.

Correct for men. For women, outside of basketball (15), W Gymnastics (12), W Volleyball (12), and W Tennis (8) are also head-count sports.
