How much is Franklin getting paid? I might just make that trade. It would basically be a money dump, but that frees up a lot of money.

Off topic, Mariano Rivera should be a pitching coach after he retires. He's taught a number of people that cutter and most of them have seen their numbers get better after using it.

Re: Carlos Zambrano at it again

Found the story, mutual option for A-Ram: Cubs agree to new deals with Ramirez, Wood - MLB - ESPN Good chance the Cubs cut him free given his decline lately. Problem is he has a no-trade clause and if he does waive it and get traded his contract becomes garunteed for $16 mil in 2012 although he would have a player option still.

Or we could trade him to the Yankees, get prospects back and not have to pay that much of Z's contract. I don't want it to be a flat out salary dump, he has value now that he's pitching like he can.

******* throw away this whole team minus the young guys and start over. I hate to say this but the Cubs are going to be the doormat of the Central for the next two-three years at least.

Brenly really knows his stuff, and if he agrees it is very telling of what is going on with the team.

Problem is they have about $90 mil tied up in Soriano, Zambrano, Dempster, Fukudome, Pena, and Ramirez. Pena and Fukudome come off the books this year, Ramirez has an option he'll likely exercise because he probably won't get what he is making now on the free agent market after the season he's having. I think both Z and Dempster are off the books after next season as well as Byrd's $5.5 mil and the Cubs are just stuck with Soriano. The only other "significant" money they can clear up after this season is Grabow's $4.8 mil, Samardzija's $3.3 mil, Wood's $1.5 mil and I'm guessing of those 3 Grabow is gone and they'll try to keep the other 2 around at reasonable contracts.

To me this mess can all be traced back to Jim Hendry. I know the guy has lucked into some great deals and prospects but for every good move he's made he's had nearly 2 bad ones that have handcuffed the team's payroll as well.
Pretty much nailed it here. Once those bad contracts are unloaded, they will be in much better position. They have a young talented group coming up/in and they will be back in the thick of it in the next two seasons.

Oh, and why did he not get a chance to be Manager? Too smart to take the job probably.

Not saying that you're in this crowd (I think it's pretty small), but I still don't want to join the anti-Quade mob.

That said, Brenly would probably have been the best hire we could have made in the offseason.

I don't think of myself as Anti-Quade, only Pro-Brenly. He did withdraw from consideration though. If he took over at the all-star break I would make a point of going to games to support him.

What he said is true but you can't just throw teammates under the bus like that either. Wish he'd just keep his mouth shut, keep pitching well, and just maybe some contender will want to trade for him at the deadline.

It's not like Big Z has much room to talk, he's been just as bad the past few years himself. A couple months of decent pitching doesn't make up for some of the terrible months he had last year, especially for a guy getting paid $18 mil like an ace but doesn't pitch like one.
Z speaks the truth! Marmol needs to make better situational decisions. Another thing, these Cubs are not a fundamentally sound team in all phases of the game -- they just don't execute when they need to. The Cubs are playing like a triple-A team, and not a good one either.

That's fair enough. It's hard not to support Bob Brenly.

If he were the manager and we could have Steve Stone back, that would be awesome.

Problem is, I don't think Brenly could win with this bunch, either. At least not this year.

I don't know about you guys but if I had just thrown two gems in a row and got nd's on both because someone can't throw strikes or get someone out, I'd be pretty ****** off too.
