Equal Revenue Share for New Fox Deal Announced

Didn't see this posted anywhere yet:

2:00 Timeout: Equal Revenue Shares For Big 12 Fox Deal - Iowa State University Athletics Official Web Site - www.CYCLONES.com - The home of Iowa State Cyclone Sports

EDIT: It looks like the original article has been removed from Cyclones.com for the time being. Reasons unknown.

The spring meeting of Big 12 Directors of Athletics ended Thursday and much of the discussion was about operational issues for the 10-team league. One of the most noteworthy decisions by the league ADs was to equally distribute nearly $1 billion in revenues to be generated over the life of a 13-year conference partnership with Fox Sports for second-tier football television rights.

That decision is in stark contrast to how most television revenue was divided in prior years. Prior to this decision, the majority of television revenue was provided to the schools that appeared on the actual telecasts.

As a result of this decision, the Big 12 will now share its overall revenue more equally than any time in its history– clearly a sign that the 10 institutions are committed to the “new Big 12”.
More good news for ISU Athletics!

I figured when Texas got its big Longhorn Network deal, that they would be more cool with equal revenue sharing with the other TV deals. Here's the question: Is A&M going to be ok with this? They seem to be the whining problem child in the group who is insanely jealous of Texas

And everyone still gets to take home Third Tier rights correct?

I would assume so since those are what would be included in the Longhorn Network.

**** A&M. Where they gonna go? The SEC never offered, and they certainly aren't going to have 13 teams. The SEC has next to no interest in expansion unless absolutely forced.

A&M could join onto a 9 team network that would be pretty viable and they'd be doing just fine.

Re: Equal Revenue Share for New Fox Deal Announced

    Forgive me my ignorance, but...

    Won't this actually hurt us?

It was my understanding that now all Big 12 football games will be televised. Meaning outside of the 2 games a week picked up by tier 1 every game will be on TV.

So if my math is correct everyone who didn't make a tier 1 game would get an even cut of the Tier 2 games anyway because everyone has the same number of appearances.

So in effect this will allow TX to be on Tier 1 every week (receiving the pay per appearance in Tier 1), as well as taking home an even cut from the Teir 2 contract.

If you can't follow that let me know so I can try to make that more clear.

How many first-tier games are there per week? I'd think the top teams in the conference might actually benefit from sharing second-tier revenue if they usually play in first-tier games.

Disclaimer: I know next-to-nothing about football TV contracts.

EDIT: see vmbplayer's post above for another way of stating what I just did.

Re: Equal Revenue Share for New Fox Deal Announced

Question... if it was based on appearances before, wouldnt it have been unequal but benefiting schools like ISU that are more likely to be on tier2?

So... for instance: Texas, would probably normally receive a higher share of tier 1, but a lesser share of tier 2 (due to most appearances being on tier 1). Now they still receive the higher share of tier 1, but an equal share of tier 2.

Only seems to be fair if we equally distribute the tier 1 revenue as well.

Not all "tier 2" broadcasts counted for revenue sharing however. None of our FCS appearances helped us in the past. I'm not sure if we will be on FCS in the future.

I think it helps ISU since we seem to get put on FCS a lot and there's no pay for that channel.

I agree on sharing Tier I, but that will be a fight for 2014.

I'm not sure exactly how the Tier II revenue was going to be dolled out, but there were different levels within it i.e., FSN broadcast vs FX and there's no telling how those different broadcasts would pay out without knowing the minute details of the deal. I'll trust that JP and the other ADs who benefit the most from Tier II (TTU, Mizzou, KU, KSU, Baylor, and OSU) had their best interests in mind here.
