    Sandbagging Volunteers in CB...

My neighbor has a family business down on the Missouri River in Council Bluffs and they are looking for volunteers to help sandbag the levee.. They bought 100,000 sandbags... His dad and brother are ISU grads... Anyways I will get more details if people are interested... Here is the deal

For the Volunteers they will give $10 per hour of volunteering twords a charity of your
choice. Im thinking of seeing if the charity could be something ISU related... Like gridiron club or cyclone club.... If we got 10 ISU fans to work for 8 hours that would be an easy $800 donated to ISU.. I will ask him some more questions about it today and if there is enough interest i will follow up..

    Re: Sandbagging Volunteers in CB...

I know they are asking for volunteers to show up at the MAC Saturday morning. I think 8 or 9 am.

From Action 3 News facebook page I got this:
Sandbagging will go from 8AM until 3PM Saturday and then starts again on Sunday at 8AM
Volunteers need to check in and bring a pair of gloves. Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

I don't see any mention of $10 to charity but your neighbor might be talking about another effort.

They say country music speaks to the heart. Unfortunately, it has to go through your ears to get there.

It is amazing the destruction that is going to occur with the mighty Mo. I've heard that there is a chance it could cut a new channel up by Sioux City if the level gets to a certain hieght, or around a certain levy. This flooding is suppose to last most of the summer.

Yep it will blow being here all summer. People displaced from their homes, swampy water and high humidity. Its going to be a big mess. Plus, the kicker, I29 is going to be a source of issue. They havent finished completing the wall next to the river to expand the road. Its exposed right now.

Some engineers have predicted the flood could reach 16th street(the viaduct). If that happens a lot of homes and businesses will be damaged.

The interesting thing is on top of the flood devastation, there will be all sorts of social unrest. This will be a long long long summer.

I think regular discharge from Oahe dam in the Pierre/Ft.Pierre area is usually 50-60K CFS, and by this weekend they will have raised it to 150,000 CFS. Thinking about all the problems this is going to cause here in SD, down into IA & NE and down river makes me sick to my stomach.

    Re: Sandbagging Volunteers in CB...

Something else nobody thinks about is all the sandbags have to be broken down after the flood is over. That is when it's hard to find volunteers because the crisis has passed. There's no TV cameras, no attention, no adrenaline, no energy. And it's tougher work. The sand bags are saturated, wet, heavy, nasty, scum-covered, foul-smelling, etc.

    Re: Sandbagging Volunteers in CB...

Hope all goes well out there. Here in Washington the river I live 5 blocks from has been above flood stage for 3 weeks and isn't supposed to crest in the forecast (which goes though June 9). Supposed to be one of the top 10 crests. Hasn't affected us yet because where we are the banks are steeper and harder to fill, however up north they are have real problems.

The river is normally narrow enough to throw a rock across and in this picture it is over a mile wide.
