    2011-12 3 Point Shooting

Just found an interesting stat. Next year's team will have 3 players that made 50+ 3's in their previous year of action--Christopherson, Allen, and Babb. Never before has ISU had a team entering the season with more than 1 guy that made 50+ the prior year, we'll have 3.

Granted, it helps that Allen and Babb were playing for different teams so that shots weren't shared among the 3, but the ability to shoot is there. Then add Tyrus McGee to the mix.

Nice stat! Really hard not to be excited for Freddie's Group.

Equally important is that they didn't each put up hundreds of shots to get there. I'm fairly certain that they all shot nearly forty percent. I don't have the stats in front of me but I think Scotty was worst at around 37%.

The scary thing is that Scotty took 90 more 3-point attempts this season (105 in 2009-2010, 195 in 2010-2011) and his 3-point percentage increased from the previous season (42.9% in 2009-2010). If teams try to double-cover Scotty like last season, that leaves McGee, Babb, and Allen to light it up from outside as well. This team, on paper, is scary good - and makes me hope that EA Sports makes a college basketball videogame this year!

I don't think Sledge is lighting anyone up from outside the arc. Now Tyrus McGee perhaps.

    Re: 2011-12 3 Point Shooting

Just to further illustrate how rare this is, the closest time to having 2 guys returning that each made 50+ 3's the year before was in the 94-95 season with Hoiberg and Beechum (Hoiberg made 59 and Beechum made 39 the previous year). Also, entering the 96-97 season Willoughby and Holloway made 88 & 24 the year before, respectively.

The previous best from 3 guys who were supposed to return would've been entering the 06-07 season when Blalock, Clark, and Stinson made 47, 45, and 42 the year before.

Basically, having 3 guys that made so many 3's the year before has never been seen before at ISU...or even close.

I think I saw a stat somewhere that McGee made almost the exact number of 3s as Scotty did in only 6 more attempts. Something crazy similar like that anyway.

Wow, could I be more vague? Maybe some of you stat gurus can help me out.

Clearly there aren't enough 3-point shots to go around for each of the four to make 50 3-pointers this coming year. But when -- stat gurus -- was the last time that we had 4 guys shoot 40% from 3-point land (which is a distinct possibility)?

Hint: I don't know the answer.

Instances with 4 guys around 40% (with a minimum of 10 made 3's):

    2005-06: Gray - 50.0%, Neal - 42.7%, Blalock - 39.8%, Clark - 37.2%
    2000-01: Horton - 39.9%, Power - 44.4%, Sullivan - 44.9%, Tinsley - 38.1%
    1992-93: Bayless - 40.3%, Thigpen - 37.2%, Hoiberg - 36.7%, Michalik - 35.6%
    1989-90: Doug Collins - 50.0%, Brian Pearson - 43.3%, Terry Woods - 41.1%, Thigpen - 37.8%

    Interesting. Thanks.

While a betting man wouldn't bet on this, it is conceivable that we'll have 4 shoot 40% or better, which will indeed be a first.

Just think about it, if one of our 3 point shooters has an off game it will not hurt anything because we still have two that can nail the three, where last year if scott didn't show up it hurt a lot. I love the extra insurance we get with the Babb and Allen.

If you buy the latest NCAA Bball game they made, there's a user on the EA Locker that uploads the updated rosters every year.

damn. Four guards who can/ should be able to light it up. As long as we get good inside play, we ought be be decent. If McGee, Allen and maybe Babb can penetrate.... wooooo, look out!

If Booker and White can clean the glass, this could again be a very dynamic team.
