In Fred Hoiberg’s first season as a head coach – at any level – the Cyclones demonstrated a remarkable spirit and enviable degree of intensity. They simply had no talent.
The trick will be assuring that Iowa State’s large crop of transfer players, many of whom had issues at their prior stops, will perform with the same passion and commitment to common pursuits.
Chris Allen (Michigan State) is an athletic wing who can guard three positions. Chris Babb (Penn State) made 69 3-pointers as a sophomore shooter. Anthony Booker (Southern Illinois) projected, as a sophomore, to an 8-rebound player if he were getting full-time minutes.
Finding a level of chemistry among such players and the team’s holdovers will be quite a challenge for Hoiberg, but so far players have suggested they respond to him.
