IOWA HS BBall game end 44-0

Mason City over North last night. That's about 130-0 in football terms. MC Coach says the right thing in the paper, but I really question hanging a score like that on someone.

That isn't good for the team ERA...although I'm sure some of the runs are unearned due to errors.

Good job out of the Mason City coach going station to station and pinch hitting everyone. You don't ever tell your kids not to compete.

You may have your kids continue competing when its a 10-20 run game, but 30? 40? 44??? At some point you teach your kids not to keep kicking a dead dog. I'm about as big of "Its your job to stop us" coach that there is, but this final score is no good for anyone.

Im not sure what is more shocking, 31 runs in one inning, or the fact that Dubuque Senior ever did anything positive in sports...

All you can do is play station-to-station on the bases. It would be really insulting if the team that was way ahead didn't even swing its bats.

So do you tell your hitters to walk up there and swing and miss on purpose? What message does that send? They had their chances. 4 errors in an inning is their own fault, not Mason City's.

Did you read the link you posted?

MC pinch hit for all nine spots in the order and even pinch hit for pinch hitters. Sounds to me like everything added up perfectly for that team yesterday.

I know Newman on several occassions had their kids walking up and stepping on home plate to strike out when they got ahead by a bunch. This was back in late 90's. I had college roommates that played against them that told me about that.

For the baseball-illiterate (yes, there are some of us who exist), could someone explain what playing station-to-station means? And what is the significance of having so many pinch hitters? I understand that a pinch hitter is a substitution, but that's the end of my knowledge of pinch hitting.

    Thanks.

Basically, you only advance one base at a time. You don't take the extra base when it's available.

Play as though everyone runs like Prince Fielder.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.

Station to station: At least for us in high school, you only took one base per batter. Even if you hit it to the gap, you just jogged to first, rounded, and went back. You don't move up a base on passed balls or wild pitches. If we wanted more than 1 base, we had to hit home run balls. I know other coaches would go "station to station" and say take what is reasonable (basically if you had to slide, you shouldn't be going). If you hit a gap shot you could take the double, but you better be jogging it and it better not involve a close play.

So many pinch hitters means it isn't the starters that were pounding the opposing team. Even the scrubs were laying the smack down.

Station-to-station is just advancing one base at a time even if you could get more. Along with that is no advancing on passed balls and wild pitches and of course, no stealing. The significance of pinch hitting in this case is it means the Mason City coach was emptying his dugout, pulling starters, playing reserves down to the last guy on the end of the bench.

Had the coach not called off the dogs imagine how bad this could have been. Sounds like they could have scored a lot more than they did, I think this coach did all he could do while still showing some respect for the other guys.
