Big 12 to stay at 4 Teams

Big 12 wrestling coaches content with four teams | NewsOK.com

Just found this and didn't see it posted. The Big 12 got the exemption from the NCAA to have a conference championship with only 4 teams.

    That's two separate things.

The Big 12 didn't need an exemption to hold a 4-team conference tournament. It can do that without the NCAA's approval. It needed an exemption to count the conference tournament as a qualifier for nationals.

Big 12 wrestlers will not be guaranteed (allocated) any spots next year, but many will still qualify on their own based on the NCAA criteria.

This explains it a little further:

Only difference between this year and last year is the champion isn't guaranteed a spot. If nobody meets the qualifications at 157 (for example) then the winner doesn't automatically qualify.

And by extension, nobody (either individual or by placing) is guaranteed a spot. They'll all have to wait until the at-large bids are announced.

That's quite a bit different than previous years.

No, that is incorrect. The champion doesn't get an a****id if nobody at the weight has qualified, but however many spots have qualified will be wrestled for at the tournament. For example, if the Big 12 has two guys at 184 that earn qualifying spots, then the guys in the finals are in for sure, regardless of their performance throughout the season. Guys like Shafer this year who stole somebody else's spot with a good performance at the Big 12s this year will still be able to do the same thing next year.

Edit: I have no idea why "auto bid" as one word was censored.

Re: Big 12 to stay at 4 Teams

Now why doesn't the Big 12 require all the Texas schools to have a wrestling program?

They've got the money, so why not?

There really is no excuse for Texas not to have a team. I'd love to see them add one.

That's what I don't understand. Texas can literally print its own currency, but can't start a wrestling program? I realize title 9 would require a women's sport to be added, but still. They have enough money they can do whatever they want.

Texas A&M would probably add wrestling just because Texas did too.

Texas doesn't want to, for whatever reason.

And the Big 12 won't make them, because Texas basically runs the conference, in case you haven't noticed.

Good luck with requiring schools to offer certain sports. That's one of the less realistic things I've read on this site, which says something.

Football is all that matters down here.

Wresting is big in some high schools around here but it really is all about football.

For the same reason that the Big 12 doesn't require ISU to have baseball.

If you are going to play that game, why shouldn't KSU and KU have to join the wrestling party as well?

It would be interesting to see UT try it thought. How long would it take a school in a great climate with virtually unlimited funds to become one of the top wrestling schools in the nation? You know that if UT did wrestling, it would be done right...

It's not going to happen in the Big XII, but it's hardly unheard of for conferences to do stuff like that.

Well yeah. Nobody is suggesting they cancel the football season for it or anything. Just that given that there is growing interest among high school athletes in the state and that Texas has enough money to fully fund and build elaborate facilities every single NCAA sport in existence, a relatively cheap sport like Wrestling would be easy for them to add. Wrestling has one of the worst ratios for number of high school participants to scholarships available at the college level.

If they add wrestling then they will have to add another womens sport
(I beleive). Of course when they figure out they have to fill a TV station with sports programming 24/7/365 they may want to add some sports.
