    Did Kiffin screw up?

So the NCAA upheld the sanctions on USC.

USC ruling paints NCAA into corner for UNC, Ohio State cases - Andy Staples - SI.com

Remember when ISU was trying to sign Steve Dillon this past February? USC signed a class of 30, including 8 early enrollees. Did they do that assuming that their appeal would be granted? Because they are going to be forced to stay under 75 scholarships (and only bring in classes of 15). Just by looking at their depth chart from the end of last season, they should have 50+ players returning.

    http://www.teamandras.com/USC/2010_U...Rev07_Both.pdf

What do you want to bet that some of their lower level, last-minute recruits like Dillon get their walking papers before ever setting foot at USC?

When I read that USC lost their appeal I couldn't have been happier. Kiffin is so freakin stupid. Why wouldn't you plan for the worst case and then if you win the appeal you can pick up extra scholarhsips the next couple years.

I think the letter of intent should be binding for the school for at least a year as well. Per se, if the player commits and signs, and you accept, you have to give the athlete a scholarship or reimburse him the net value of said scholarship if something like this happens.

Flying home from Jamaica, I ended up sitting next to a couple from Knoxville. They were pretty glad to see him gone before he ruined their program.

While I agree oversigning is not a good thing, it will not ruin the USC program. Pete Carroll is the one who should be shouldering the blame here. Kiffin just screwed over some young kids, but the USC program will live on to recruit more star players, believe me.

How would they know that though? I am not a fan...but I heard fans from UT that loved him...until he bailed on them. They were thrilled with him (check his recruiting class) at UT despite the bravado that Kiffin spouted inappropriately at times.

I think any and all of their recruits for 2011 should be released from their LOIs if requested and given the opportunity to find new schools as soon as possible. I am guessing the players are more concerned about where they are going to play football then they are about getting one year of free scholarship without being able to play football.

I hope Steve Dillon has the opportunity to reconsider and decides to come to ISU. We would love to have him.

This was a quick part of the conversation. To be honest, they may only have said that because he bailed on them. I didn't get the idea that they were insiders or anything.

    Re: Did Kiffin screw up?

USC will be back. It stinks for them to not be bowl eligible this year but next year they will be again and the scholarship limits will eventually blow over. They're still USC and it's not like the Pac 12 is a juggernaut. Kiffin is still recruiting well and with UCLA in the toilet, they basically dominate Los Angeles.

Yeah...I only wrote that question because it reminded me of the love that many many ISU fans had for GC until he bailed...

Can you blame ISU/Tenn fans for that though? Acts such as what GC and Kiffin did imo justify how the majority of ISU/Tenn fans feel about them now. You can't just ditch your job while under contract and expect everything to be ok. They may be decent guys, but it was still a **** move.

they signed as many early enrollee's as they could, so that they could count towards the previous year and not the new year in which their schollys would be limited ... also you have to remember that by limiting their schollys a year doesn't mean they can only sign 15 a year it just means they have to limit their total by 10 that year ... the 25 schollys a year is only a guidline and not the exact number, as i think they only signed 18 players the previous year iirc ... they had alot of defections after the sanctions came out so they technically had more schollys to offer as well ...

If you read the actual link you will see that without some attrition, they will only be able to sign 6 players next year(they will have 69 on scholarship). They already have 7 verbals.

Yeah, which is why it wouldn't surprise me if someone like Dillon was cut loose before August. I expect USC to go SEC and start playing the numbers game Houston Nutt style.
