Teams in NCAA most comparable to Iowa State

Three teams I think are most "comparable" to Iowa State are Virginia, NC State, and Arizona. When I say this I mean teams in BCS conferences that usually hit around the same level as far as prestige, talent, and national interest go.

We could beat Notre Dame, Michigan, Iowa. So I would say we are most comparable to Alabama.

I would say you are pretty much right on. I would say or reputation from the media and other fans are right there with Indiana, Duke, Baylor, Arizona, Stanford, Northwestern etc...

I cannot agree with Northwestern, they made it to a rose bowl in the 90s. The best bowl ISU has ever been to is insight.com.

It depends if you are referring to the schools athletic program as a whole or just the football program.

they did make it to the rose bowl one year, but I think the media still puts them in the dumpster.

As far as the national media is concerned, ISU has made a national splash once. Other than that, we have been a bottom feeder.

I would consider us most like OSU, one great player once, never really done anything other than basketball.

After reading the thread's title, but before reading your post, the U of Arizona was the first team that came to mind. Like ISU they play in a state where they struggle competing for the state's top recruits with the other D1 state university. Like ISU they'll have an occasional 6 or 7 win season and go to a mediocre bowl, but they can't seem to get over the hump. Also, both now have hired young assistant coaches from top D1 schools to try to turn the program around. Although it is taking Stoops a while to turn U of A into a consistent winner, I think he's on the right track. Last season they won 3 of their last 4 with wins against Cal and Oregon, with a sophomore quarterback. I don't think any coach is going to come into ISU and turn things around overnight. We need to be patient with Chizik and give him at least 4 or 5 years before we judge.

Rutgers and Wake Forest are what Iowa State can be in 5 years. Give it time.

I Would sort of agree I guess, but definitely wouldn't compare us to NC State. They are far better each year, get way more exposure on ESPN, and usually have a couple big upsets each year.

Well, the bright side is that we weren't lumped in with Temple. About 15 years ago, we could have been.

Baylor was on that list - just hidden under a heading

    TERMINAL BCS-LEAGUE UNDERACHIEVERS
Baylor -- Eleven straight losing seasons, spanning four different coaches.
I don't think you reasonably can put Colorado on that list. They have a National Championship in the last 20 years and have had more success than most in the Big XII. Their woes are more recent. If you put Colorado on that list you'd also have to put Texas Tech, who have won less than Colorado has.
