FEMA asks for Money back from Aplington-Parkersburg

FEMA asks A-P Schools to repay $1 million

APLINGTON --- The Federal Emergency Management Agency is trying to reclaim nearly a million dollars given to the Aplington-Parkersburg School District to rebuild after an EF5 tornado hit the community.
The district is appealing, hoping federal officials will reconsider.
"They came up with a revised, reduced version," Superintendent Jon Thompson said.
If the district loses, $970,000 already used on several projects would have to be repaid.
The violent tornado killed six people in Parkersburg and destroyed the high school in May 2008. Students, however, were able to start classes in the new building in the fall of 2009.
FEMA officials initially approved money for a temporary gymnasium at the middle school, which served high school students as well after the disaster, according to Thompson.
Under an early plan, the facility would have been used for a year, then demolished.
"Seemed kind of illogical to us to spend over a million dollars on a building to just tear it down," Thompson said.
To make the facility permanent, officials decided to spend up to $500,000 of the district's money.
FEMA officials approved but have subsequently changed their minds

Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.

Whatever happens, it's a PR disaster in the making.

I guess they could apologize for making something more permanent.

Support the Red Cross, they actually did something that helped the people involved.

I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone.

Looks like they shouldn't have approved it to begin with if they had any question on it at all. It also sounds like their original plan was a shining example of government waste.

Re: FEMA asks for Money back from Aplington-Parkersburg

FEMA just got done re auditing people in the cedar rapids area. They called me up this winter telling me they needed documentation I had already turned into them over a year ago. And that I had just 2 days to come up with the paperwork or we would have to pay back the $43,000 we received in jumpstart funds.

There's a bill in the Senate, which is floundering in a committee somewhere, naturally, to make FEMA cease and desist. FEMA is obligated by law to try to collect funds that were handed out in error, but I think someone in that department is being a little overzealous. Write your senators and tell them to get on board with this bill.

I can not support a NPO that pays their CEO $600K/year. That's more then the president of the United States makes. Like most NPO's too much of the money goes to wasted admin costs/salaries.

Should insurance have paid as FEMA says? $750,000 of this one million is related to that it seems.

I don't do signatures. Blondes, brunettes, and red heads are a different story.

I have been on a lot of natural and unnatural disasters. The American Red cross has always been there. Providing shelter to people affected and food to firefighters and police officers. I know they have there issues, but no other organization does what the Red Cross does nor does it as well.
