CR Gazette take on the TV Contract

I looked and didn't see this posted but thought you guys might be interested. If already posted then just disregard and let it fall to the bottom. Mike Hlas from the CR Gazette talks about ISU, BIG 12 and the tv contract. There's also a picture of Rhoads looking a little different these days.

I really think in the next 2 -3 years the Big 12 will add 2 more members to get the championship game. Just that game alone will almost pay for the additional 2 teams coming on board without the other 10 losing money. I think the additional 2 depending on who they are and their geographical location could make the ESPN rights larger and potentially allow the big 12 to renegotiate the new Fox deal for an increase in annual pay and maybe offer a shorter life on that deal in order to up it sooner.

I've been surprised that they didn't reach out to BYU. But it sure doesn't look like they're going to. They could always go for the Big 11 model. I don't know who the other candidate would even be since it is very unlikely that ND is going to join a conference and I don't know that they can coax Arkansas out of the SEC. Maybe Louisville or Memphis? Doesn't matter I guess. Unless the Big 10 or Pac 10 makes a move to go to 16, I think that the Big 12 is set at 10 for the time being.

I just don't see it happening. If the Big 12 was going to add two more teams, they would have done it prior tothe recent TV negotiations. The big televen was syuccessful with ten teams. They showed it made it easier to get a ouple teams in a BCS game without a championship game. Not sure why people don't think a conference won't be successful with 10 teams.

And I tend to disagree that a championship game alone would pay for two additional teams. That means that game would have to produce at least 30 million in profit as I don't see two other teams adding much more than $5-10 million onto any TV deal.

When the next contract is signed in 2015 or so, the network will probably suggest two more teams added at that point. Big 12 can tell th eprospective members how much money they have if they join. Despuite all the hoopla that it cannot happen, ND (not North Dakota may be in play by then. Maybe Nebby might want to alter course also after they slipped from AAU status. Maybe TCU will be fed up with the Big East. A lot could happen in the next four years.

The only we add 2 teams is if they increase the profit for everybody.

BYU is a team that could do that, but after them we'd have to lure someone from the Big East, and with their improved TV deal, likely expansion, and easier slate, it may be harder to poach a Big East team in a couple years than it is now.

Notre Dame with UTesque conditions. Problem solved.

The comments after that story are gold.

That would be an epic win/win for all parties involved. Tell that to the Domers though. Not sure if Texas would like the idea of them in the Big 12 either.
