    2011-12 MBB Expectations

It is probably good that expectations may be tempered for the upcoming season.

Personally I do not think any of the recent events will affect our upcoming season. It is disappointing to lose Godfey, but our hope for a good season is more dependent upon the transfers and and jc transfer Mcgee living up to expectations and all of them gelling as a team. No need to get too down this time of year.

Plus I have read several comments by Bobby Lutz that gives me confidence in Fred. He was obviously impressed by CFH during his time here.

Here is one of Bobby's quotes. I have seen others too. Do you think he would bother mentioning this in a wolfpack article if he didn't mean it

"I know very well at my age the history and tradition of NC State basketball, two national championships that I remember very vividly," Lutz noted. "For me to have a chance to be back in the state, No. 1, but I wouldn't have just left Iowa State for anywhere. I liked it there. I had a great position. Fred Hoiberg is a great guy to work with and for.

    Re: 2011-12 MBB Expectations

I am hoping for a tourney bid. I still think that is realistic and our expectation should still be that, IMO. We lost some depth in our front court with CG. Hopefully we can land Percy and that will soften the blow.

Bubble team? Depending on our Non-Con schedule that will be an NIT team's record.

We will likely need to finish at or 1 game under .500 in the new Big12 to be considered a bubble team.

You can sing it with me:

Undefeated and it feels so good.

OK, a few losses in there, but I expect the tournament. I feel OK with that.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.
Make this one for the ages!

    Re: 2011-12 MBB Expectations

I still think we can finish in the top half of the conference. For one think, the B12 wasn't exactly dominant this past year and I see no sign that it is changing for the better. Secondly, Fred had us within striking distance of many games last year and we will certainly have more depth, scoring ability, rebounding and defense with our current roster than we had in 2010-11.

If the transfers are as good as advertised, we could be in a pretty good position.

    Re: 2011-12 MBB Expectations

There are so many unkowns for next year it is hard to predict what the team will do. Royce White has never played one game of college basketball. How good is McGee really because it is hard to tell with JC guys? Will the team gell? Will Chris Allen produce more in a different system? Same with Booker. Will Railey still be on the team? Will we be too thin in the front court? But, there is no doubt that we have more talent and depth than previous years. I think expectations are so high because of the fact that we have more depth and talent and also there are a lot of unknowns.

If Royce White is as good as he is hyped, if Chris Allen and Booker are better players in a more uptempo offense, if McGee is half as good as he was in JC and if the team Gells then there is no reason why the team can't finish near the top of the big 12 next year.

My expectation is to finish 4th in the b12. Surprise team of the year in conference.

    Re: 2011-12 MBB Expectations

    Very Good Teams:
Kansas - will pretty much always be in this category in the pre-season

    Good Teams:
Texas - I don't trust a Rick Barnes coached team, but they will always have talent
Texas A&M - losing their coach hurts, but they have a lot coming back and are a solid team
Baylor - tons of talent, another top recruiting class, will probably still finish near .500

    Unproven/Question Marks:
Kansas State - lots returning but is it any good?
Mizzou - some proven talent, but I think they have a down year
Oklahoma State - losing Moses is going to hurt but they have the #3 SF coming in
Iowa State - we need to leapfrog a bunch of teams and get into the good teams section to go dancing
Texas Tech - lost a TON but have some decent recruits coming in. Still won't be very good.
Oklahoma - awful last year, I don't see them getting much better

How will fans feel if we have an okay year and maybe only make the nit?

I'll be a little disappointed but as long as I see improvement I'll be happy with the programs direction.

    Re: 2011-12 MBB Expectations

I think the team will do very well in the pre-conference games, although I am not 100 per cent sure of the schedule. Probably a record similar to or slightly better than last year.

In conference, I hope for .500. The Big 12 will be down slightly next year, so that will help. But then, ISU has to play teams like Texas and Baylor twice instead of once, so that will hurt too.

I would love to see ISU get 20 wins, and then make a run in the Big 12 tourney. There still is a season-ending tourney, right? I'm not sure an NCAA bid is reachable next year, but I would hope at least an NIT bid could be expected.

    Re: 2011-12 MBB Expectations

I expect to be in the NCAA tournament. As to how far we could go or a seed, I don't know. We have a lot of hungry players with talent who have been sitting a year waiting for this.

Personally I think that should be the expectation. Improvement and an NIT invite. I'm obviously going to be spending all year in Hilton cheering for the NCAA tourney invite, but as I stated in my above post, we will need to finish in the top 5 of Big XII to be considered a likely Tourney team and I'm not sure if that is possible.

Agreed. It would be a disappointment, but as you said, you can't be too dissatisfied with improvement.

Improvement will allow Fred to boost his recruiting prospects.
