    Rio Crime

Really interesting (a little long) read about crime and gang wars in Rio de Janeiro (sp?), Brazil and how it relates to the upcoming Olympics and World Cup taking place there in 2012 and 2014.

    ESPN - OTL: Deadly Games - E-ticket

As someone who was once considering heading down to Brazil for the World Cup in the coming years I was really interested to find all this info out about Police and Gangs fighting over Favelas that were less than a few miles from the venues that were going to be used for the Olympics.

I had just finished reading that story about 20 minutes ago, and was about to post it. Excellent read! Makes me wonder why the IOC didn't consider some sort of emergency relocation of the Games.

I thought the same thing, they have got to be in dark on this issue. There is no way that violence that unkempt can go on near an event that huge without disaster striking. Will be interesting to see if more news is made out of this issue or it somehow just disappears.

kinda related.... check out the movie City of God sometime. It's about the gangs in Rio and is based on a true story. Awesome movie. It's in Portuguese, so gotta deal with subtitles.

    Re: Rio Crime

I know a guy who was down there a few years back for some sort of sporting event and he and his buddy got kidnapped...the kidnappers were trying to get a ransom...luckily they were able to escape the apartment they were being held in when they were left alone with 1 guy...

It's a pretty scary story...obviously not the way I tell it what with all my descriptive details...but take it from me, scary stuff...

    Re: Rio Crime

The Rio games are probably going to be a bloodbath, with gangs kidnapping entire national teams for ransom.

Emergency relocation? And have to return all the bribe money they received? This was happening when they chose Rio.

    Re: Rio Crime

I read the article. If the police don't get things under control soon, don't be surprised if the national government institutes martial law over the favelas where all the violence is occurring at least until the Olympics are done. Brazil is not a rich nation, nor is it a poor one. Its government needs to address the abject poverty that plagues its city slums. People migrating to the cities to find jobs, and not finding any, is the main culprit of the growth of these slums. Brazil has experienced some rapid economic growth recently, seemingly not enough to alleviate the poverty issue to any tangible degree. This issue will take a number of years to mitigate.

I didn't realize Fast Five was so, well, accurate...

Chuck Lidell: I paint my toenails with pink and black polish. Problem is, I get more paint on my toes and on the carpet than on my nails. Any advice?
Maria Sharapova: Don't you beat up other guys for a living? I don't know how to answer this.

The women in Brazil, my God the women are incredible. That is all I have to add.

There's always been violence, but at least according to the article, it REALLY picked up shortly after the selection was made.

    Re: Rio Crime

This was one of the main reasons I thought Chicago was going to land the Olympics, I just couldn't imagine the committee choosing a city with so much crime.

About a week after Rio got picked, a gang took down a police helicopter with a rocket launcher, no joke.

This place makes Chicago's southside look like Del Boca Vista.

As someone said above, the Rio games are going to be a bloodbath.
