    Very sad to hear.

Near my house, I've seen several drivers completely miss a school bus' stop sign and keep going, both on the left lane and in the opposite direction lanes. They blow right by at 40mph.

Oh man, between stuff like this and the Neiderbach trial going on right now I can barely stand to open up the newspaper. I'm a newly minted dad, and while these stories are tragic enough to begin with, they're that much worse once you have a little one of your own to think about.

Especially when they ride the bus every day. I think I'll meet them at the bus door today.

This breaks my heart as I have a seven year-old as well. On a side note, as a past school bus driver, if the road has more than two lanes, the opposite direction traffic does not stop. Bus routes are designed to never have children cross over three lanes. I wasn't sure if you live on a two-lane or more.

Here is the law: • Roadway with two or more lanes in each direction: A driver must stop when approaching the school bus from behind when yellow or red lights flash. However, under these roadway conditions, drivers need not stop when meeting a school bus traveling in the opposite direction. School bus drivers are not permitted to let passengers on or off the bus in situations where they must cross multiple lanes of traffic.

All that said it makes you wonder if this law should change. Most people in Ankeny, especially on Delaware, stop when the bus is in the northbound lane and they are in the southbound lanes. Since the law is written this way it always aggravates me to see the line stretch as there are usually a chain of two to four bus' that come through that area at the same time, around 7:55. I've just learned to bypass. Stories like this make you wonder why I would get mad at people being cautious.

Hitting the child is bad but at least I could understand how that could happen (not paying attention). How this low-life could hit the kid and drive off baffles me.

Re: This just made me sick to my stomach

God you hate to see that.

This is why I take my six year old to the bus stop every morning. During the whole school year the only driver who has passed the school bus with the stop arm out was a city bus driver. I called Metro Transit and gave them an earful complete with date, time, location and route number. They started giving me "we can't tell which driver it was without the bus number or driver description" even though that route only takes that street twice all morning, about 45 minutes apart. That tune changed real fast when I suggested that a letter to the editor might be in order. I was quickly talking to the driver's supervisor who thought it was a very big deal. I don't like to be an *** about things, but as demonstrated here we are talking about kids' lives.

That's interesting. However, here in Minnesota, I've always seen both sides of traffic stop when the sign goes out. In fact, when we were learning driving, we were told that the only exception would be if you're on the opposite lanes and there is a median or other dividing barrier between the two sides of traffic (ie 'separated roadway').

I think more than often, people don't know what to do, but they see everybody else stopping, so they stop too. Yeah, it backs up traffic, but I'd rather be 5 minutes late than have some kid get run over by a vehicle.

This is what I remember learning in driver's ed - in Iowa.

Happened in my hometown. Knowing the father of the victim as well as the driver, it is a sad, sad day all around.
