    Lawn mower: gas or electric?

I'm in the market for a new lawn mower (push) and am debating between gas and electric. Electric models are cheaper to buy and seem they would cost much less to operate. Anyone use an electric one? Things to consider? TIA

To clarify: the electric ones I've seen have a battery that you charge -- no cord. I wouldn't do the cord thing.

get a gas. and a gas that has a separate oil res. and a self propelled, with bag/mulch capabilities, and multi speed on the self propelled. snappers are well worth the cash. got a 15 year old 1 that starts with 1 pull to the day. things a beast.

You would really regret buying an electric mower. Pulling a cord around the yard would be a pain in the ***. Not to mention you would have to buy cords long enough to go all the way around your yard and have outlets on all sides of the house. Gonna have to agree with CYVADER...gas is the way to go and you cant go wrong with a good ole' snapper.

Agree 100% with this. My neighbor has an electric and it is painfull to watch. Pulling the cord all around, getting caught in the bushes. Yuck

I hate to go all green on you, but if it's a small lot you might want to look into a push reel mower. I've had one for about a year now and I love it. Quieter than a gas or electric powered one and (I know, I know) environmentally friendly.

Some electric mowers don't require a cord.

I'll second this. If you don't need a self-propelled it's actually more enjoyable to use. The quiet factor is worth it alone, but it's also said to be healthier for your grass the way it cuts (scissors-like action vs. the rotary). Add to that - no gas, no oil and no changing of spark plugs. You just don't want to let your grass grow too high as most of them can't cut well when it's higher than 3-4 inches.

Re: Lawn mower: gas or electric?

I bought this in 2009 and haven't had any regrets:
Amazon.com: Earthwise 60120 20-Inch 24-Volt Cordless Electric Lawn Mower: Patio, Lawn & Garden

Don't really have any maintenance, just need to bring the battery in over the winter. I have a smaller lot, but I probably would have bought it if I had a bigger yard as well.

Like the others said it's quieter, no gas/oil to deal with; just pull the handle and go

Re: Lawn mower: gas or electric?

I use a plug-in mower once years ago when I was in Germany (I tried doing a lot of chores to make up for some free room and board). Toting the cord sucked, but it sounds like you have that covered. The electric was very light and quiet (though not silent). The one I used had a small deck (maybe 12 or 14"?). For a small yard I would definitely go electric.

Re: Lawn mower: gas or electric?

I'm not necessarily recommending this mower, but if it were a cordless rechargeable battery powered mower like the Craftsman mower I'm going to post, I'd certainly consider it much more than I would one that you had to keep plugged in. Hell - I have determined that when I buy my home I'm not even buying a corded trimmer - that got old after about 3 minutes...
