Vikings, Governor Close to New Stadium Deal

Gov. Mark Dayton said Friday he met privately with Minnesota Vikings owners Zygi and Mark Wilf to discuss state funding of a new football stadium, and that he hoped a site would be picked soon as the list of possibilities narrowed to two.
Dayton met with the Wilfs late Thursday. The team owners also met with officials in Ramsey County, where several county board members have been pushing the idea of putting the stadium on the site of a former Army ammunition plant in suburban Arden Hills, about 10 miles north of St. Paul.
"We're very close to a deal," said County Commissioner Rafael Ortega, who along with colleagues has suggested a half-cent county sales tax increase to help pay for stadium construction. But Ortega's colleague, Commissioner Tony Bennett, said that about $100 million in costs needed to upgrade the transportation infrastructure around that site seemed to be hanging up a final deal.
The Wilfs also met Friday with elected officials in Minneapolis, where putting a stadium at or near the team's current home - the Metrodome - is the other live option. Minneapolis City Council President Barbara Johnson did not return a call seeking comment Friday. Minneapolis leaders have said they're unwilling to levy a city sales tax, but stadium supporters have said other local financing options are part of the discussion.
"I said I hope that we could get this narrowed down to one site as soon as possible," Dayton said of his meetings with the Wilfs.

Does tax money usually help pay for NFL stadiums? I guess I'm not sure how that usually works.

    Yes, quite substantially.

Hard to believe that the Vikings are reportedly agreeing to pay 40% of the new stadium's cost. If I was the owner, I'd just move.

Hennepin County doesn't want to do this because Hennipen County residents' taxes paid for Target Field.

I think I speak for Vikings fans everywhere when I say, "we're glad you're not."

If they can squeeze that much out of the Wilfs, more power to them. They are playing a dangerous game, though.

Which was the wiser investment anyway for the tax payers.

I think it's hilarious that Governor Dayton is working hard on a Vikings stadium bill, while whatever plan he has to erase Minnesota's $5 billion budget deficit sits on the back burner...

Just keep moving the new stadium site more to the North. How about International Falls?

And it would be equally foolish for him to ignore this issue. I am not a Vikings fan but I would be upset if they moved. Dayton can't ignore the economic impact it would have on the state if the Vikes were forced to go elsewhere.

The extra $100 million they were talking about on the news last night in regards to road improvements around Arden Hills is probably playing into how the state is getting Ziggy to pony up more for the stadium

The practice of owner's threatening taxpayer's to build new mega staduims has got to stop. The taxpayer's are already the people who pay for all of the other costs of the NFL (the cost to attend an NFL game is another discussion). The owners have to step up and do their part too. Do the owners benefit from owning an NFL team? They way owners talk, its like they think they are doing mission work for the betterment of everyone else.

They are the Minnesota Vikings after all. New stadium location doesn't have to be in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.

I agree, but right now is not the time to take a stand on that issue. Los Angeles is just waiting for an team. The city wants one, there is an ownership group ready, and a stadium deal is imminent, not to mention that the NFL is licking it's lips at the prospect of getting a team in front of the nation's second largest television market.

Wilf could move the team in a heartbeat and probably make substantially more money. That's why it's a dangerous game for the state of Minnesota to be playing. They are not in a power position.

The process by which the NFL gets stadiums built is ridiculous, but it's reality at this point.

Re: Vikings, Governor Close to New Stadium Deal

The economic blow that the Twin Cities would take by losing the Vikings is staggering, and its effects would last a long time.

This isn't about the government supporting a sports team for fun's sake, this is about keeping an economic cash cow, something that's incredibly important in the current economic climate. The Vikings are big business, and its never good for any area to lose that kind of business.
