    SBNation ISU Preview

Your Son And The Iowa State Cyclones - SBNation.com

Interesting analysis and good read. They did call the ISU WRs one of the worst major conference units in the country. I'm starting to agree...at the very least, they have a LOT to prove.

Hit the nail on the head. We've been saying these things for the last two years as a fan base.

-Lack of big plays on offense and too many drives stalled at the 30-35 yard line.
-Very efficient once we get in the red zone.
-Feast of famine in the turnover department.

That red zone improvement is encouraging. It seems like a couple years ago we were great for 80 yards but couldn't finish at all.

That was surprisingly indepth. Can't say I take issue with any of it.

Then we have a streak of missed fieldgoals that further deteriorates our scoring success.

I chalked a lot of that up to AA being a senior and knowing how to take care of the ball in critical situations.

    Re: SBNation ISU Preview

That was a well written article....

This was also the best paragraph I've ever read on Tiller and our situation at QB. This hits the nail directly on the head.

In his limited action, Jerome Tiller has shown decent ability when it comes to game-management -- knowing when to throw the ball away, knowing when not to take risks, knowing when to live to fight another down, etc. When you've got a killer defense and big-play threats on offense, that's perfect. However, ISU is going to need a quarterback who can create on his own, and I'm not sure Tiller has that in him, at least not over 60 minutes in at least six games.

The only issue I saw was that he seemed unaware of the existence of Steele Jantz.

If Steele can help provide some more big plays he could deffinitely provide an alternative to Tiller that the author aluded to.

    Re: SBNation ISU Preview

We're actually best at a couple things...

    1. Efficient red-zone offense as mentioned in the article (although technically not #1)

    2. THE #1 Bend don't break defense

Fun Stat Nerd Tidbit: Iowa State - Football Study Hall

I appreciate the not breaking part, but that is WAY too much bending! I guess though until you get better athletes, that's the strategy you have to take. Hope the other team beats themselves sometimes.

    Re: SBNation ISU Preview

His analysis on last year's defense was spot on.

The O would gash 5-6 yard gains all the way down the field but minimal big plays. This forces the offense to execute for the full length of the field and maximizes opportunity for turnovers. I think that's why I was impressed with the D last year. Very few easy TDs and every inch of field was fought for. I hope that continues.

If the Dline can improve I think this strategy will work out for the D in 2011. Rather than 5-7 yard gashes, trimming to 3 yards will force more passing downs and punts.

The key to the whole article-- we have the coach, now we need better talent to go along with him. See 2011 NFL draft.
