    Bret Meyer

    *sigh*

    This stinks...but...

Last night was clearly one of his worst games as a Cyclone. I'm not sure if it was the worst, but close.

He completed 60.8% of his passes. Not great, yet not horrible. The turnovers though, were very costly. As I recall, both were passes right-to-left, intended for Barkema. Both times the passes came late plus Ben didn't come back for the ball.

The fumble was a bad snap yet it didn't seem like Meyer really hustled for it.

Some of the incompletions were just bad. Overthrowing and something new - underthrowing open receivers. And, on the longer completed pass to Sumrall, if Meyer had not thrown the thing so late, R.J. would've had a least 10 more yards - if not a TD.

In general, Bret looked like a freshman out there. Throwing off his back foot, indecisive with the ball, skiddish, etc. I have no doubt that physically Bret is a good QB. Mentally though, I think 2006 really took a toll on him. And, the last 2 games of '05 weren't great either. Meyer had really one solid performance last season (UNI, 2nd half) and in reality, just a few from '05.

    ESPN.com - Meyer Stats

I think we, myself included, have an inflated view of what Bret Meyer is as a QB.

Another thing I noticed, and I could be reading WAY too much into this. After the 2nd interception, in which Meyer made the tackle - he was on the sideline on his back for a little bit. Some of our guys were near him, yet as soon as they noticed he made the tackle, they turned around and walked back to the sidelines. Not a single person helped our starting QB to his feet. It really surprised me and I can honestly say - I wasn't pleased to see that.

I said in the spring I really liked Arnaud. He's more fundamentally sound than Bret, just lacked the experience/decision making. From what I saw last night, our starter isn't so hot at those two things right now.

I was slightly, stress slightly, surprised Chizik didn't give Arnaud a shot late in the game. I agree with the decision, yet wouldn't have disagreed with #4 coming in.

I do firmly believe, if Bret struggles early vs. UNI, we'll see Arnaud on the field.

It really pains me to say that, but something needs to be done. Meyer wasn't the reason we lost last night, a team effort. But the QB position wasn't really helping us last night either.

    Re: Bret Meyer

It pains me as well, but thank you, it needed to be said. However, he's still our number one, he deserves another chance. It's his opportunity to take, once again. I hope you're right about the "best man will play" mentality.

    Well said 22...

I don't want to throw him under the bus, but he didn't help things any. No fire.. No leadership.. No urgency..

He seriously reminds me of Drew Tate. Peaked about Sophmore year then seriously regress. Its too bad. Two years ago he has a shot at the pros. Now he might be lucky to stay the starter all year.

    Re: Bret Meyer

Honestly, I think this is the same Meyer from last year and the year before. The O-Line hasn't ALWAYS been the problem and now we know why. His balls have no zip or accuracy. Blythe was wide open, but yet had to jump and just barely get one foot in to get that TD. I think Arnuad will be soon arising.

    Re: Bret Meyer

I really want to see the Meyer back that put this team on his back and led us to victory his freshman year in that bowl game vs. Miami (OH).

That game, I think - really inflated what we thought we'd see from him in the future.

But when you look at it, in that game he completed a meager 35% of his passes. It was his legs (23 for 122 yards) that won it for us. Since then he's been inconsistent at running at the right time and being decisive with it.

Only 8 times in his career has be been in the 100's for QB rating. For a college QB, that's not that hard to do.

I'm not piling on Bret, I'm just finally realizing - he's not the QB I thought he was. He's always, for the most part - been the same guy. In the past, weaker opponents and a surrounding cast "carried" him. Not happening anymore...

    Re: Bret Meyer

Bench him for a bit, nothing more than a few series, but that will put the message out there that you have to perform. I am not saying Arnaud is the greatest player ever, I am not going to be a hawk fan. But sometimes you gotta shake it up.

Last night I think Bret neither did better or worse than I expected. It was a pretty standard Bret game. Things can only go up from here.

    Re: Bret Meyer

I want to see Arnaud in the UNI game, just to get his feet wet. Let's see if this kid can produce and execute. This doesn't mean have him start or play a whole quarter or half. I just want to see a spark and fire from this offense and if a redshirt frosh can do it, by all means I want him.

    I share similar thoughts.

Meyer is in his 4th year of actively playing QB. By now, he either "gets it" or he doesn't. At this stage, there's no point hanging on and hoping for magical improvement or that some kind of metamorphasis is going to happen one night. If Meyer can't cut it, time to move on and see if the next guy has what it takes.

    Re: Bret Meyer

Remember when we played Missouri that time when Chase Daniel came in and won the game in a come back victory. I forget who the QB was that got injured(Brad Smith?), but he was supposed to have a lot of talent and experience. But Daniel was the one who brought them back and won after they were forced to try something new. I hope that this staff does do what they say and let the best player play or at least try something different.

If that was standard we are in trouble.

    Re: Bret Meyer

Im just going off of last year. Three step drops that turn into holding the ball 5 seconds before scrambling. Weak throws. Inability to run to the left and throw (two picks last night) Ability to hit some nice safe outs and wide open come backers to Blythe. Average speed.

If anyone has seen anything in his career otherwise I might have just missed it.

    Re: Bret Meyer

If nothing else, we should start to get Arnaud some playing time as leg4cy said. I really would like to see Meyer succeed, but that was ugly. Looking at that stats from yahoo as it went on, as I didn't see the game, at one point Meyer was 12-15 with the one pick. Then he couldn't seem to complete anything. Was Kent State's defense that good?
