Were the orders to shoot OBL no matter what?

I just wonder if the mission was to shoot him and get it over with, rather than let the whole thing drag on through a trial, like Saddam. It sounds like he was hiding behind a woman, and resisting, but what exactly is resisting? If the order was to make sure you shoot him down like a rabid dog, then great job. It is just like getting the extra point blocked at the end of the KSU game a couple years ago. All of a sudden it is game over and all you can do is go home.

Yes. It was a kill no capture mission.

According to the NYT article I just read it sounded like he was on the third floor of the complex and was took out near the end of the mission.

Re: Where the orders to shoot OBL no matter what?

I personally have no idea, but if I was to venture a guess, I'd say it was a seek and destroy mission. I would also guess that they wanted to make sure he was there, otherwise we would have just rolled a Predator over the border and killed him that way, but then there would be VERY little chance that we'd ever really know if he was there or not.

News said lastnight that the original plan was to bomb the compound but Obama chose this ballsy maneuver instead. Paid off. Plus I think bombing a country that is our "ally" would have been a bad idea. If there would have been mass civilian casualties it would have been ugly.

I've heard mixed messages about it, but I'm sure if they could easily get the drop on him when he was unarmed, they were to do so, but only if that was certain.

Re: Where the orders to shoot OBL no matter what?

My guess would be that everyone involved fully expected a shootout and it was expected they would kill him. I would think, had they not fired at us, he would have been captured and brought back.

the US has a policy of not killing unarmed people trying to surrender, thus it was labeled a kill or capture mission. however everyone associated with the mission had to know going in that UBL would not attempt to surrender. and i doubt that using a human shield during a fire fight would qualify you as an unarmed person trying to surrender.

    I wouldn't be so sure.

This has all been mentioned in other threads, but:

We've had numerous bombings inside Pakistan over the last 10 years, so I don't think that would have stopped us.

There were something like 9 children and 22 total civilians that were not harmed and left at the compound when we left. This would have been the minimum collateral damage from a bombing. (Source)

The biggest benefit from the raid will probably end up being the computers and papers obtained from the compound.
Among the items taken from the compound were 10 hard drives, five computers and more than 100 storage devices which include disks, DVDs and thumb drives, a senior U.S. official told CNN.
"We were on the compound for about 40 minutes and we were able to acquire some material that was there. A lot of that is currently being exploited and reviewed," White House senior adviser on counterterrorism John Brennan told CNN Tuesday.

It is absolutely amazing that they were able to do all of that in 40 minutes.

The other thing I heard discussed last night on CNN was about how it is really impossible to believe that the Pakistani military didn't know about the raid. The compound was 800 yds from their main military academy, and they didn't do anything. They must have been given the order to stand down by someone.

I still find it absolutley astonishing that a relatively small group of SEALS was able to infiltrate a fortified position, make their way through it until they found him, and then proceed to take him out all without any of them even suffering a scratch. This just goes to show the excellent work of some of the most elite US military personnel.

I read this morning that they scrambled fighter jets once the helicopters were flying away.

oh hell no, if OBL lived through the mission, the taliban/al-qaida could try to rescue him. a dead terrorist tells no tales.

That's one of the funniest things I've read on CF. I can just picture the Taliban or some Al-Qaida grunts trying to rescue OBL from US custody.
