Anyone shopping for washers/dryers right now?

Was looking at 5 cubic foot front load washers -- figured if I'm going to spend a bunch of money I'd get the biggest I could. Suddenly today I go out to shop online and NOBODY has any 5.0 washers. I looked closer and everything that was just yesterday advertised as 5.0 is now listed as 4.3.

Did some measurement standard change in the universe and it just went into effect today, or what?

Probably some environmental initiative. Saw an article that Consumer Reports gave failing grades to all front load washers.

EPA says you should be net zero energy in your appliances to help Mother Earth.

The washer is a hand cranker and the dryer is a clothsline.

I see what you mean. Samsung/Sears have a couple 5.0s are going thew way of dinosaurs. Must be an EPA water thing or DOE Blue Energy restriction or maybe the clothes do not get clean in the bigger tub.

Frankly, this blows. First the toilets, now the washers. Next will be the microwave capacity. If you use a smaller wash capacity tub of 4.3, you may have to wash more times than in a 5.0. My 5.0 comes in handy on the weekends.

I think you are confused. There is nothing of the sort from Consumer Reports.

No, the washers are not actually getting smaller. They are CHANGING THE MEASUREMENTS ON THEM. Models that were 5 cubic feet yesterday are now listed as 4.3 today and it's across the board: Sears, Lowes, Home Depot, Best Buy. All their measurements in cubic feet changed TODAY. The washers themselves are no different, only their advertised capacities in cubic feet.

My thought was maybe there was two ways to measure cubic feet and the government mandated everyone switch to one or the other by a certain date (which must have been TODAY) to avoid confusing consumers, but I can't find any stories about it online.

Actually they might have... I just bought this last week:
    Samsung - 3.5 Cu. Ft. 8-Cycle High-Efficiency Washer - White - WF220ANW/XAA

The page says it's 3.5cu ft now, but when I bought it last week it was 4.0 cu ft

An error in terminology, but there most certainly is

Sam Kazman: How Washington Ruined Your Washing Machine - WSJ.com

"In 2007, after the more stringent rules had kicked in, Consumer Reports noted that some top-loaders were leaving its test swatches "nearly as dirty as they were before washing." "For the first time in years," CR said, "we can't call any washer a Best Buy." Contrast that with the magazine's 1996 report that, "given warm enough water and a good detergent, any washing machine will get clothes clean." Those were the good old days. "

you said front load machines were worthless... that quote says nothing like that, and it's 4 years old

I said they failed. That was an error, as they did not necessary fail, unless you call it a failure to earn a Best Buy award. Perhaps environmental standards have become lax since 2007, or perhaps technology has overcome the BS that has been regulated into the machines.

EDIT- you might also note that the article that was linked is from March of this year, so I would assume the issue has not disappeared.

Yes, that is slightly old information. Of 88 washers in CR's continuous testing program, 41 are recommended and 6 are best buys.

There is something to your point, however. It does seem when these regulations go into effect there is a period where it screws everything up, but then the manufacturers do adjust and overcome it again.

But I digress...the issue here related to my original post is not an actual change in the size of the tubs, rather how they are measured.

:) Reminds me of the Rand Paul's rant about his toilets...

YouTube - Sen. Rand Paul on Consumer Choice in Energy Committee Hearing

(NOTE: if you can't view this without adding politically charged statements to the thread, you might want to bypass watching this. Hate to throw the OP's washer/dryer thead into the cave.)

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that. ~ George Carlin

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life:
The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves Orcs. ~ John Rogers

This is the Washing Machine we recently bought.

LG WT5001CW Washing Machines - - LG Electronics US

5.2 cu ft capacity, High Efficiency, and it's a top load. They have a model up as well that has 2 additional cycles I believe. Wife loves it.
