    Brewery Tour in Texas

I am heading down to Texas for a wedding over Memorial Day weekend. I will have some time to do some exploring while down there. I am thinking of trying to set up a tour of the Shiner Bock Brewery. Has anyone else done this tour? Is it worth the hour car trip I would have to make?

Where is XLK9? It's his favorite beer and I'm pretty sure he has been to the brewery...

I did the Shiner GHASP last year (100 mile bike ride from austin to the brewery), but unfortunately I was riding with some friends who hadn't trained well so we were late arriving. That meant that the brewery tours were closed. It was still a great time. I can't say whether or not it would be worth it, but if you get a chance to go, post your experience up here. I'd love to go back and see the tour. No beer beats fresh shiner (the stuff you get up here is usually not as good for whatever reason).

    Where is the Brewery?

Edit: NVM, its ~50 miles east of San Antonio. Too bad, because if were in the northern part of the state, I might consider making a trip down there.

I've taken the tour; it's not bad. Shiner is in the middle of nowhere though. There are some good beer tours in Austin you may want to check out as well.

If you're in the Houston area, check out St. Arnold's. Good beer, and you get plenty of beer tokens to consume. More of an "open house" but I believe they've started the brewery tours up.

    +1

That place is great. They do offer a tour if you'd like. And if not you will have a great time in there beer hall enjoying some of the best beer I have ever had. Their Amber is to die for.

Came here to make sure this was mentioned. Never done the Shiner brewery tour. As far as Texas microbrews go, it really isn't a very good field. Real Ale has some decent stuff, and Rahr Brewery has a good black lager. An hour away from Shiner, TX still doesn't get you to a city. Where are you going to be?

    Re: Brewery Tour in Texas

The tour itself is kind of overrated. I understand some people enjoy the process and like to see how it is done, but the only real reason to do one is to get the free beer at the end.

    Re: Brewery Tour in Texas

St. Arnolds is a great time if you're in Houston, at least now that they've upgraded their brewery. The old place, with ~400 people crammed into an old building with no air conditioning, was total hell anytime but the winter (yet still worth it). Stop somewhere and grab food before you go in.

If you're in the Austin area, try the Live Oak brewery Live Oak Brewing Company - Austin, Texas
For my money, the best beer made in the state of Texas, but it's not well known because they only supply on tap near Austin. Their hef is one of the best beers I've ever had.

Real Ale brewery makes some good beers. If you are near San Antonio, they are located in Blanco, TX.
