BYU receives bowl invite for 2011 season

presuming they are eligible. Seems a little early, but who am I to judge?

Similar deals are made with Army and Navy well in advance, too.

Army and Navy have deals in place as far out as 2013 already.

Navy: 2011 Military, 2012 Kraft, 2013 Armed Forces.
    Army: 2011 Kraft, 2012 Military, 2013 Poinsettia.

Has this ever happened before? I mean inviting a team before fall practice even starts.

    EDIT: Saw the above comment.

Interesting. I suppose they have no conference ties anymore, so they can pick who they want.

What would happen if the made a BCS bowl? Could they back out of the agreement, or would they be stuck in the Armed Forces Bowl?

I think they're just invited to the bowl. Nobody says they have to accept, do they?

Backing out of a previous agreement because a better offer comes along doesn't seem very honorable though...

Is this really any different than the bowl agreements that all conferences have? I forget, But aren't they independent now?
