    Blue screen on games

Just curious if anyone knows of an obvious place to start- I have newer computer, windows 7, quad core, 1 TB of memory, Radeon 5670 video......

Anyway, it crashes to blue screen randomly, almost exclusively when I am playing games. The games I play and not all that graphically intense, but I imagine there is a fair bit of memory usage behind the scenes (Civilization V, Hearts of Iron).

From the searching on the internet that I've done, one of the things mentioned pretty often is a power supply issue. Any ideas?

Not sure. Is there a way to check that? I have an Antec case that has a top fan and side fan, and looks to have plenty of ventilation. The last game I played crashed within three minutes of start up.

    Re: Blue screen on games

There are programs out there that can help you monitor CPU and video card temps. It could also be your CPU overheating. I'd google search video card and cpu temperature monitoring and hit up the "overclocking" forums. They tend to have some of the best advice for temp monitoring programs since they are always pushing their systems to the limit.

EDIT: Did some searching for you. The most common programs I've found recommended are Afterburner, GPU-Z or HWMonitor.

Afterburner & GPU-Z only monitor video cards and HWMonitor will monitor most any hardware in the computer. If your motherboard has temp monitoring I'd use that to check the CPU and one of these for the video card. If it doesn't then you'll want to start with HWMonitor.

This is where I go for computer information. The people over there are pretty hardcore about building and overclocking and have good advice. Their search works without an account as well as browsing threads.

First thing I would do before anything else is just make sure that the driver for my video card is updated.

I have the 57xx and it has acted up on me before - but usually an update is all I need to get it back on track.

I just installed the GPU-Z, and I'll monitor it. I also set both fans on high (previously set on low). First run through a game had the temperatures jumping pretty quickly.

    Re: Blue screen on games

There's an issue with Radeon cards and Windows 7, atleast that's what I think it is. My home computer does it occasionally, and my work computer does too. Mine will sometimes recover on it's own talking about how the graphics driver stopped responding, and it's definitely not a heat issue, I have a temp monitor running all the time on my home PC. If you google "Radeon driver has stopped responding" you'll find a laundry list of forum posts of people having the same issue.

The radeon driver attempts to correct the issue, but if it can't it blue screens.

I have never had an issue. Sometimes it's an operator problem, not hardware.

You have 1Tb of memory? That must have been one expensive PC.

I suppose it's possible, but I'm not the only person having the issue.

Wasn't too bad. I had someone in our IT build it for me.

I think he was giving you a hard time insinuating that 1TB of "memory" would lead someone to believe you have 1TB of RAM rather than a 1TB hard drive.

1Tb of ram is probably $75k. We have servers at work that are up to 512Mb, and 32 cores, you can get some serious work done with that.

Oh......no. I'm not exactly up on all the terms.
