Selig Pushing for Expanded Playoffs Next Season

With both sides expressing support for adding two playoff teams in 2012, negotiators for baseball players and owners are considering having the new wild-card round be best-of-3 or winner-take-all.
Because longer series would push playoffs deeper into cold weather, the sides are not considering have the new first round be best-of-5 of best-of-7.
"I would say we're moving to expanding the playoffs, but there's a myriad of details to work out," Commissioner Bud Selig said Thursday at his annual meeting with the Associated Press Sports Editors. "Ten is a fair number."
Since 1995, eight of the 30 baseball teams make the playoffs. In the NFL, 12 of 32 teams make the playoffs. In the NBA and NHL, 16 of 30 advance to the postseason.
In the new format, the two wild cards in each league would meet, and the winners would advance to the following round against division winners.
"The more we've talked about it, I think we're moving inexorably to that," Selig
    said.

i don't like the idea. I like how it is set up know where making the playoffs is an accomplishment and not just a reword for being in the top half like in the NBA.

NO! Every other sport's playoffs go on for 2-3 months. I don't want to see that happen with baseball. It's an accomplishment just to make it!

This. I can't believe how many teams get into the playoffs in the NBA. It becomes somewhat meaningless if you can get in just by being in the top half. Same reason I like the NCAA Tournament at 64 teams - it's an accomplishment to get there in and of itself.

Stupid, stupid stupid. The baseball season and playoffs already goes WAY too long. The only way I'd support this is if they shortened the regular season. They need to have the postseason in september and have it wrap up in October

Re: Selig Pushing for Expanded Playoffs Next Season

The number of teams getting in wouldnt be as high as other leagues still so I wouldnt object on that note. I would not want the season any longer however. In fact they shouldnt be playing past October IMO. Shorten the regular season to 154 again and maybe. Good luck though on that one.

Nothing to see here mods. Keep moving.

Re: Selig Pushing for Expanded Playoffs Next Season

I actually really like the idea. Although I do think they need to figure out a way that the World Series isn't going into November. But I believe they should either shorten the regular season by 10-12 games or eliminate some of the days off in the playoffs. I really like how this would more even more of an emphasis on winning the division so you would avoid another playoff series.

But it could just be the Cub fan in me that just wants 1 more chance at the postseason...

That's just the thing though, MLB will never shorten the season because that's taking money out of the teams' pockets. TV scheduling won't let them take away days off in between games. So basically Selig will expand the playoffs and push the World Series another week deeper into November when football has taken over and nobody gives a s**t about MLB

Maybe they should just play all playoff series 2 games, travel day, 3 games, travel day, 2 games and shorten the playoffs a bunch. Start the first week of October and you finish in October.

It is kind of ridiculous that baseball has a 162 game schedule and only rewards 8 teams but that's the beatuy of this sport.

Re: Selig Pushing for Expanded Playoffs Next Season

No way will they be able to shorten the schedule. Even just going to 154 games means four less home games, less money for the teams and the union would never agree to let the players take a salary cut to reflect the eight fewer games that would be played.

Also, Selig gets bashed a lot, way more than Goodell or Stern, but I think he's done the best job of any current commissioner in the four major sports.
