Lawn Care (Grass Seed) Help Needed...

So I purchased my first home and am now moved in, getting everything settled, etc... Thanks to no one living their for the past 2 years the lawn has taken a good beating, it also doesn't help that 4 of the 5 adjoining lots are empty (weeds and crabgrass abound). The yard is about 50/50 grass to bare ground/clover and a few weeds here and there...

I have a 4-step lawn care program purchased which includes the crabgrass preventer, the weed and feed, fertilizer and a winterizer. Being here in KC it seems like we are already passed the point for the crabgrass preventer; but could still throw the seed down and go from there and save the preventer for next spring.

Would this be worthwhile? Or am I better off just waiting for next spring to allow more time to prep the area (rid the weeds, cut back the clover better, rake it over good, etc...)? I could live with one year of patching grass, just to see how it does once we get going...

If you are looking to overseed DON'T use the crabgrass preventer! If you read the bag it probably mentions this too but it makes it VERY hard for new grass seed to germinate. If you want to get rid of crabgrass later this year overseed now and once it is established and you see crabgrass growing you can get a specific kind of Ortho chemical that you can spray in the summer that will kill the crabgrass.

Re: Lawn Care (Grass Seed) Help Needed...

Thanks... I had wondering about it and read a few things about waiting 12 weeks after the preventer to put seed down. That's why I wonder if I sure just do the seed now and worry about the crabgrass next spring when the grass is hopefully already flourishing...

My only question on spreading the seed now is how well will it come up if I don't have any good raking or prep of the yard done??

Hire someone to aerify your yard, then seed.

It's best not to fertilize if you are seeding. You might consider seeding now and let the seed grow for 6-8 weeks before mowing it. You can always spot weed and use crabgrass killer. Apply weed and feed in June. Let your seed time to take hold.

I would put down the crabgrass preventer now, kill weeds, aerate and seed in the fall.

start over. seriously. basically drag your yard down to just dirt, and seed. start watering right away. get good germ on that, and don't fertilize for 2-3 months. you will more then likely get some crabgrass this year, but it will die off in fall and then next spring use the halts to keep it from creepin in. you will have a better base for grass then trying to correct the years of neglect, and all the grass will be the same mixture, so you won't have different colors of green filling your yard.

Re: Lawn Care (Grass Seed) Help Needed...

There is a crabgrass preventer that you can use at the same time as seeding bluegrass and/or fine fescue grasses. It is called siduron and is fairly expensive. You probably won't find it at a place like Lowes, or Home Depot. Earl May or businesses that target lawn care customers may carry it. It used to be sold in the line of Greenview fertilizers.

I'm not familiar with the KC area, but it may be pushing the time to apply crabgrass preventers.

My sod was laid last spring and I put down crabgrass preventor last week, it had fertilizer in it ..the mixture was 24-0-3 and my lawn has not hadly greened up at all..not sure what to do. In respomse to the op I would have some professional lawn care company come in that can put down some 2 4D in the fall.

Re: Lawn Care (Grass Seed) Help Needed...

Thanks for the tips thus far... I'm not interested (read, don't have budget) to bring in some pros to do the job or else that would be a lot easier and likely have better results.

From what I've read and some other opinions I think I'll likely see how the lawn does this year with at least a little bit of care and let all the crap work itself out. Do a good round of weeding late this summer and spread seed in the fall to hopefully get a good start before winter. I'll throw the crabgrass preventer on come next year...

Why not enjoy your spring and summer and go the lazy man's route?. Plug some zoysia into the bare spots. Give that Zoysia 3 years and it will take over the entire yard forcing out the crabgrass and the weeds.

If you can swing it, just till the yard and lay sod. Putting it in yourself is pretty easy as long as you do the prep work ahead of time (till and level). In just a couple of weeks of heavy watering it'll be just fine.

I've tried to deal with growing grass on an area that has weeds and it's just not worth the effort. You'll spend all summer trying to get it nice and not enjoying it.

Don't tempt me... I am lazy. And I love zoysia when it is green. Hardly needs mowed. Hardly needs water. Hardly needs weeded. Super soft, super lush, super green (when green).

Seriously, if it wasn't brown until mid-late June, and died in September, it would be the perfect grass for Iowa.

Re: Lawn Care (Grass Seed) Help Needed...

This guy lives in the Kansas City area. Zoysia greens much sooner and turns brown much later down there. That is why I suggested he start plugging away. No way a guy with children wants to spend all his time on the yard. Besides, I have never seen a starter house that did not need a lot of attention inside and outside.
