    No more championship game

    Yahoo Sports

The article is about how some of the Big XII coaches feel about not having a championship game. I don't know what to think about not having a championship game personally, but I do like the fact that there is a round-robin scheduling.

Round robin hurts ISU. Playing Texas/Oklahoma every year only hurts us.

I like the round robin. Everybody plays everybody, and the team with the best record is the champ...

A championship game helps those 8-4 or 7-5 North Champs as they only have to be mediocre and then pull off 1 upset to go to a BCS game...

    Re: No more championship game

Now is the time to change the landscape at ISU. A "fresh start" if you will for the upcoming season in the "new" conference. We need to have a huge year and keep it rolling. (Again, I feel we can do well. Two teams we historically played poor against are gone. We need to get in the mix and do well in this conference.) Sure, Texas and OU will ALWAYS be the teams to beat...but ISU now must be very competitive with A&M, Missouri, OSU, K-State and Tech. Here's to hoping that Baylor and KU always hold up the rear. (We should ALWAYS expect a W playing those two schools- year in, year out.)

Round Robin is the fairest way to determine a conference champion. I like it.

    Re: No more championship game

Round robin does hurt ISU. It also hurts the conference because of the money lost off the championship game. What we don't see right off the bat is how it might help by improving the perception of the Big 12 as being a even more dominate conference. Obviously the schedule just got harder for everyone, not just ISU.

    Re: No more championship game

I'm fine with it. For years Hawk fans wouldn't give our strength of schedule any credit because they acted like the North was some separate conference.

I'm also of the theory that playing Texas and OU every other added this level of aura that made these already difficult games even tougher from a mental standpoint. Our guys know that they can line up against Texas and punch them in the mouth.

I'd say that at this point that the odds of the entire conference being down enough that we could be in the hunt late in the season are about as good as they were that the Big 12 North would be that bad in 2004-05.

In 1984, I was hospitalized for approaching perfection.

Which can be gotten right back by having a 2nd BCS team. With the new schedule, it'll be really hard to leave out a Big 12 team that finishes 11-1 (8-1).

    Re: No more championship game

The round robin schedule in the Big 12 is a double edged sword for Iowa State. On the one hand, it gives ISU a HUGE amount of exposure in Texas. Instead of only playing in Texas once or twice per season, ISU will now likely be playing in Texas 2 or 3 times per year, and the other Texas teams will have to come to Ames. A lot easier to market ISU to Texas recruits when ISU plays 4 plays teams from that state every season.

The bad news, of course, is that the additional exposure comes at the cost of playing better teams. Now ISU has to play Texas/Oklahoma every season, which will be losses 80% of the time, so more often then not ISU will start the season 10-2 at best. TAMU, Tech, & Okie State will almost always have a higher talent level than ISU (based on geography alone) - so even if ISU beats 1 of those teams, the best record ISU is looking at would be 8-4. Then you have to consider that ISU still has to play Missouri who traditionally gives them problems.

Then you add in the fact that ISU plays Iowa annually, and historically that is a win once every three years, and all of a sudden 7-5/8-4 look like a pretty good year for ISU.

ISU gains a lot of exposure from the new Big 12, no doubt about that, but the schedule gets a heck of a lot tougher.

I understand your line of thinking...

That said, this schedule also makes everybody else play every other team. Kansas and Iowa State were the only teams from the North that had to play OU and Texas in the same year. That meant, every two years we got em both (drastically harder) and then got to skip them both for two years (drastically easier). That will most likely add at least one more loss to all of the other north teams that used to avoid either OU or Texas every year (assuming they would typically lose to these teams). After all... Iowa State and Nebraska beat Texas the exact same number of times. Once each...

It'll end up being a wash. We aren't competing with OU and Texas for B12 championships anytime soon. But we ARE competing with everybody else in the bowl pecking order.

I guess my point was, the old system allowed for ISU to avoid playing the best two teams in the league half the time (over the course of 12 years, you would have only played Texas/OU six times), now you play the best two teams in the league every season.

In the old system, you had six seasons of being able to miss the most tradition rich programs in the conference, so those six seasons you had (theoretically at least) a better chance of winning two more games. Two games can be very important to a program like ISU....can easily make the difference between 15 extra practices and a bowl trip at the end of the season (not to mention the exposure that comes along with making a bowl game).

Nope....the saying goes, "familiarity breeds contempt"....Penn State was in the National Title conversation every year up until they joined the Big 11...I'll end with a fable i've been told over the years:

When first the Fox saw the Lion he was terribly frightened, and ran away and hid himself in the wood. Next time however he came near the King of Beasts he stopped at a safe distance and watched him pass by. The third time they came near one another the Fox went straight up to the Lion and passed the time of day with him, asking him how his family were, and when he should have the pleasure of seeing him again; then turning his tail, he parted from the Lion without much ceremony.

Upsets in the championship game has previously cost the conference at-large bids for BCS bowl games as well as bids for the national title games which has cost the conference as much money as the championship game revenues.

Since when has 7-5 and 8-4 not been a great year anyway. I like the round robin. Yes, we have to play texas/ou but so does everybody else. I hated that rotation of teams amoungst the north and south. I really think over time rivalries will develop because we play everybody every year.
