Iowa State vs. Kent State - NCAA 08 Preview

NCAA 08 CPU vs. CPU Simulation - Week 1

(I know it's a video game, but I thought it'd tide some of you over until tomorrow. My plan is to do this every week there's a game with a dynasty that's been saved to mirror the real-life record. Injuries will also be factored in, with the injured player in real life being removed from the depth chart for the weeks that he is out. This is also done, as the title suggests, with the computer versus the computer, so no human interference is involved.)

    IOWA STATE ESCAPES, WINS 23-20!

What a wild finish! Iowa State struggled for the majority of the game but came back to win in a wild 4th quarter that almost guaranteed certain doom for the Cyclones. ISU struck first with a long drive to open the game, but couldn't quite find the endzone, instead relying on a 33 yard field goal by Culbertson. Kent State answered toward the end of the first quarter with a field goal, tying the game at 3-3.

Quarterback Bret Meyer had to leave the game early in the 2nd quarter due to a dislocated shoulder, but will be available in the contest versus UNI next week. Austin Arnaud came in for back-up duty and performed admirably, throwing completing 12/22 passes for 126 yards, a TD and an INT (both of which came within the waning moments of the game).

Kent State appeared ready for the contest, leading the Cyclones for most of the game until ISU took a 16-13 lead late in the 4th quarter. Kent State answered back a few minutes later, however, with a 64 yard TD pass that gave them back the lead, with the score at 20-16.

ISU drove down the field, appearing to take the lead with the ball within the 5 yard line. Austin Arnaud, however, was intercepted with about 50 seconds left in the game. The Cyclone lucked out when the Golden Flashes fumbled the ball on the very next play, giving the Cyclone one last chance to take the lead.

It wasn't until 4th and 2 on the 7 yard line that Arnaud threw a floater to Milan Moses in the far corner of the endzone that eventually became the game winning touchdown pass.

All three scholarship QBs saw playing time, as Arnaud left the field for a few plays attending to an elbow injury. Scales ran the show on the ground, as MacFarland pounded the ball repeatedly giving Scales 21 carried which he translated into 135 yards for an average of 6.4 yards per carry. R.J. Sumrall led all the receivers with 7 receptions and 110 yards.

On the defensive side, Ace Bowen and Jon Banks tied for leading tackles, both making 8 tackles. Ace was also responsible for forcing the fumble that gave ISU a 2nd chance to win the game. Travis Ferguson had an impressive game as well, racking up 6 tackles, 3 of them sacks. Although the defense shut down the QB threat in Edelman, they had trouble containing HB Eugene Jarvis, allowing him to run for 117 yards on 12 yards before he left late in the 4th quarter with an injury.

The rest of the game stats can be found here.

Granted, the CPU was pretty unrealistic with the play selection. I saw at least one QB draw with Meyer on 3rd and long. Maybe the game is still stuck on Cotton's play calling.

You gotta think NCAA '08 assumes that McCarney is still the coach and is going off of his tendencies...

So if Mac was still coach, we win 23-20.

Now that Chizik is coach, we win 42-20...

do you sim, or do you play it, but let the cpu play both sides. Also have you changed the playbooks and how about difficulty level?

Re: Iowa State vs. Kent State - NCAA 08 Preview

I let the CPU play both sides, and I'm using default playbooks. It's on Varsity to limit the number of turnovers (AA and Heisman both usually get about 4 turnovers from both sides each game), and I'm using a custom set of sliders for CPU play.

EDIT: I might also add that this is the PS2 version of the game. I have no idea how the 360 version of the game would play. :)

I could be doing this too if I hadn't just started seeing the "Red Ring of Death" a week ago.
