    2015: Big 12 1st Teir Rights

I'm going to jump on my soapbox and take a trip down the hypothetical road, so hang with me.

The Big 12 just increased its 2nd tier rights by 350% from $20 million to a reported $90 million. IF the Big 12 got the same increase for first tier rights in 2015, that would be $210 million per year ($21 million per team).

That would be a total of $300 million for 1st and 2nd tier rights alone. On top of that, by 2015 there will be 3 separate networks within the conference providing huge exposure and bringing in anywhere from $15 million to $1 million (at worst).

And the bidding should be even more intense in 2015. Once the new Pac 12 deal is reached, no other conference will be left for TV negotiations until 2015 when the Big 10 and the Big 12 first tier deals are both up. That means ESPN, Fox, and Comcast can not add any more content until 2015.

What does this all mean? It means that June 2010 may have been the most important month in Iowa State history. It means that until at least 2024, Iowa State will be a member of a BCS conference. It means 30 years of the Big 12 conference and Big 12 rivalries. It means an unprecedented amount of money following into athletics for the first time in history. It may be the means for baseball, hockey, and other sports to be Division 1 athletics at Iowa State. It means more TV exposure for athletics and the university as a whole. It means increased facilities, increased enrollments, increase donations, and a better ability to attract top students and facility.

The name of the game changed yesterday and we don't even realize it yet.

"And they'll rake in even more in 2016, when the new first-tier deal kicks in. That deal, which launched in 2008, brings in $60 million a year now from ESPN/ABC. Imagine what a new deal will bring in five years."

It seems that a lot of us probably owe Beebe an apology. Everything I've read this week says that he was hamstrung by the TV deal the guy before him signed, which was pretty good at the time. What would be great is if after we really strike gold on the first tier deal the market bottoms out.

I don't know that Beebe can be completely absolved, because our revenue sharing model still isn't ideal, but then again, if I were a fan of Texas or Oklahoma I'd see their part of the argument. Also, I'm still not thrilled Nebraska and Colorado left the conference, but that's over and done with. Regardless, there's more money coming down the pike and that's the main thing we need to take away from this.

    Re: 2015: Big 12 1st Teir Rights

the way the revenue is split is just a continuation of what was put in place when the conference was formed and mostly due to Nebraska. OU and Texas were down at the time and Nebraska fought for uneven distribution based on them being on TV every week. Now what we really need is a top 25 basketball team that gets picked up for big Monday and a few other ESPN/ABC games to drive our roundball revenues up.

2016: the Rain-Maker. As long as Bevo is making it rain, I got no problem at all with the 'horns.

Exactly, we just need to do our part and start beating Texas and OU in basketball thus getting more national TV games. Obviously the football deal is going to be one of those two. Kansas is going to be the favorite most years in basketball. We need to be in a position to win a title every 4 to 5 years. I think it can be done, hell we did it back to back once already.

While I am all for a basketball powerhouse, when it come to that negotiation, they will talk about basketball for 5 minutes and then spend the rest of the time on football. Basketball simply doesn't matter.

Pollard said he'll be rooting for the Pac12 getting a huge deal. That will give an indication of what the B12 can expect.

    Re: 2015: Big 12 1st Teir Rights

Not trying to be a Debbie Downer but 13 years is WAY TOO long for only $90 Million/year. After 2016 the Big 12 second tier rights will be virtually chump change.

To the OP yeah 210 million is not 21 million/team. Remember that is not split evenly.

One thing I like about the 2016 negotiations is that most of the other conferences will be locked in to something. If the Big 10 and Big 12 are the only two remaining I could see ESPN, Comcast (NBC), CBS & Turner turing their backs on the Big 10. Why you ask? They have their own network and they are in bed with Fox (49% owner of the Big 10 Network). Those networks can throw a lot of money at the Big 12 just to spite Fox. The big 10 would have to take whatever Fox offers because that is the only offer. I am not saying that is what will happen but it is a possibility.

You're almost as bad as Tornado Man in Big 12 threads. Good lord, we just made some serious bank. Enjoy it.
