    Barnett-> Meyer?

    I haven't followed anything other than Chris's reports and he keeps reporting that Jared Barnett has made major leaps and bounds. So it got me to thinking: could this be similar to the Meyer-Flynn QB battle back before the '04 season with Barnett being like Meyer and Tiller like Flynn? Obviously there are other guys in the picture like Capello and Jantz, but ya know, if the freshman is ready, why not?

    Improvement doesn't mean he's ready to start. It's still a Jantz/Tiller battle.

    Cross, is the gap that big that Barnett isn't deserving of a shot with the ones?

    Good grief. Can we be any more fricking ridiculous??? Saying that a kid who was injured during his redshirt, and is still in the midst of Spring drills, is "better" than a multiyear starter? Hel-l-o-o?!!

    Well I suppose technically Tiller would be. It's a stretch but true I guess.

    I'd say multi game, not multi year

    I think he is comparing Barnett to Meyer in his freshman year not as an overall player. The title -> is an arrow not a greater than symbol.

    "Freddie knows the game," Bird said. "I'm sure he picked up a lot of stuff over the years from different people. College is different from the NBA, but I'm sure he'll do a great job."

    This. I'm not comparing Barnett to Meyer's career but the potential similarity at the start of their careers. Meyer started in 2004 as a freshman (a redshirt too maybe?) beating out Austin Flynn who was a junior that year...

    Meyer was a RS Frosh and Flynn was a RS Soph who started the year before as a RS Frosh.

    Personally I wish we would have had a better O-Line in Flynns first year. He never really got a fair shot at QB and his development was severely stunted because he was running for his life all season in 03.

    The whole situation just proves to me how much better the current staff is than under DMac. We aren't in a position where we have to play a RS Freshman due to poor recruiting and depth.

    As for JB, while he has shown flashes, I think he still needs more time to physically and mentally mature. He was hurt some last year which set him back. I think JT and Jantz have the upper hand this year. Barnett will be well primed to take over in a year or two though.

    Just cause he is a freshman does not mean he does not have better tools than a Junior to be QB....Freshman start over Seniors on some teams.

    Its pretty pathetic how people here expect so much from freshman.
