    Flames Reveal Dense Ant Colony

A controlled prairie burn south of here Thursday afternoon revealed a dense colony of large ant hills — many of them 3 feet high and 6 feet in diameter.
“We’ve seen these before, but never so many in a concentrated area,” said Rob Roman, roadside vegetation manager for the Linn County Secondary Roads Department.
Members of a Conservation Corps Iowa crew, veterans of scores of prescribed burns, said they too had never seen such an impressive concentration of large ant hills.

Re: Flames Reveal Dense Ant Colony

This is really not surprising at all. In native prairie areas and in reconstructions as well, the presence of mound-building ants is typically a good sign of a healthy ecosystem. There can be a pretty large number of mounds in an area, so I think it is more that they just havent seen that before rather than it is unusual. you need to look where they would be to see them.

Pretty cool creatures, most species are in the genus Formica, such as Formica montana (prairie mound-building ant). And it is pronounced form' ick eh, not for Mike' eh, but the name is related to the source of the countertop material. Formic acid is present in the ant's venom (yes, they will bite) and is the foundation in the process to make the formica countertop stuff....

I was on a burn site a number years ago and the number of ant mounds after the burn is what surprised me most. Native Prairie's and how they respond to fire is a fascinating subject for me.
