    jack trice tradition

    link

i just got chills reading what he wrote in his diary. i think it would be pretty cool if they had this posted somewhere in the locker room or hallway for the team to read before they step onto the field a la notre dame with the play like a champion today sign that every player touches on the way out.

I heard at one point they were looking to make it into a movie. Has anyone heard anything about that?

    Re: jack trice tradition

That is why we shouldn't rename the stadium. Hold on to tradition and honor those that have given their all for ISU.

I've read that before and I am surprised if its not bronzed somewhere around the stadium...if not it should be. I like the "Hit it Hard" slogan for the football team this year. It's simple and straight out of the Fight Song. Lets use things that are a part of ISU history and give them a stronger tradition.

2 years ago on the basketball posters / schedules / TV ads they used it.

    Re: jack trice tradition

What is the real history here. Was Jack Trice "targeted" for injury by the gophers because he was a black athlete? If so, can't his trampling to death be considered premeditated murder? It is really a sad situation to read his words and how excited he was and how proud he was to play for ISU only to have it all end during his first game.

And I'm sure anyone would have been convicted for it too...

    Re: jack trice tradition

There is a statue of Jack at the north end of the stadium and those words are inscribed there. I make the walk down there at least a couple of times per season with my young boys and we discuss the story of Jack Trice and we spend a little time with Jack's likeness. It never fails to bring a tear to my eyes and to put things in perspective when it comes to FB.

If I remember right, that plaque was in a dark, dusty corner of State Gym. I noticed it when I played hoops there.

    Re: jack trice tradition

I seldom post on here but I thought I would add my two cents.

If you really want to know about the story of Jack Trice check out a book called Football's Fallen Hero. It's a really quick read and makes you realize there is more history to Iowa State Football than you think.

Jack did a barrel roll at 3 blocking lineman and he was trampled at the bottom of the pile. Now common sense would say it was racially motivated, but Jack's best friend and other teammates were quoted saying it was a freak accident.

This young and unheard of "Ames" team led by Trice and other sophomores was neck and neck with the national powerhouse Minnesota team at half. Trice left the game and hence the team lost.

Jack actually died a few weeks later, as opposed to dying on the field or in Minneapolis, which is what I thought originally. It is kind of sad that this powerful story of Iowa State's first black athlete was unknown for so long and is still relatively unknown among the fan base.

I think we should incorporate this in our program more than the humble statue south of the jacobsen building.

    Re: jack trice tradition

I remember signing petitions in the late 70's to rename the stadium for Jack Trice. Unfortunately there were a lot of people who were against the idea and it took much too long to finally honor Mr. Trice appropriately. I hope that we never forget and that Cyclone fans will always be humbled and inspired by his sacrifice.

It used to be Jack Trice Field at Cyclone Stadium, and it took a while to switch the name to Cyclone Field at Jack Trice Stadium because many people didn't want to lose the nostalgia they had for Cyclone Stadium.
