    GIS Certification

Anyone here attend ISU's GIS certification program(s)?

I've come to the point in my career where I need to hang around home for a while, and add some more tools to my tool bag. I've been hanging out with a bunch of NGA guys, and they seem to think I could put GIS to use to good effect in my work.

So... school me on the quality of instruction and the utility of GIS in developing products, and/or anything else you care to talk about relating to the program.

    Re: GIS Certification

    I have a friend who's working on a Master's in this. Can I send him your e-mail?

Caution, he's my friend, so he's a nerd. If so, send me an e-mail, or PM, or whatever works.

    Re: GIS Certification

I did the GIS program on the side while getting my BA CE. When I was there (02-06) the quality of instructors and equipment was top notch. I do know that a couple of the instructors that were there when I was there have since left. But don't let that stop you, GIS is honestly one of the fastest growing needs in all industries. It is a great tool to have especially in this job market.

    Re: GIS Certification

Interesting! I nearly enrolled, but then landed a good job. I still wonder how things would have turned out if I went into that GIS cert program. I was a CprE, so it wasn't something that directly would have helped my career, but it was something I found easy and interesting.

    Re: GIS Certification

I am currently getting my GIS certification online through Penn State University. So far it seems to be a really good program, especially if you are still working. Google it and check it out.

    Re: GIS Certification

Thanks for the feedback. In my current work, I do a lot of "gut-level" and old fashioned reports analysis, but think I could really knock it out of the park with the ability to map some of the trends I am seeing.

    Re: GIS Certification

I'm currently finishing up my GIS certificate at ISU and its a great program. It's applicable to almost any field, so there is no downside to getting it.

I'd highly recommend taking LA 567 (Advanced GIS Landscaping Modeling) with Paul Anderson if you can. It is basically a self-driven class, but Paul gives you assistance to reach project goals along the way.
