    HBO: Game of Thrones

Premieres in a couple of weeks. After watching the sneak preview, I am pretty excited about the show. Seems dark and gritty. Makes me want to read the books.

Just to warn people at work, its a little graphic but nothing to bad.

I'm not really into the fantasy genre, but the books are awesome. Only problem is the most recent book in the series is out in July but has been delayed 3-4 years. I barely remember the others at this point.

    re: HBO: Game of Thrones

Totally agree, was only moderately excited about this in relation to "Camelot" that began on Starz last week. But after seeing the premier episode of Camelot and the sneak preview of Game of Thrones, my opinion is totally switched. I am pumped for this show.

Everyyard, what is the first book? I would love to give it a read before the series starts!

its definitely one of the more interesting reads. There is no one protagonist, and people you like die, and its told from many different character perspectives.

    re: HBO: Game of Thrones

I've read all of these books. The only problem with this show is that I am afraid it will only further delay George R.R. Martin’s production on the book series which is honestly excellent. Well, the first three were fantastic. He broke up the fourth into two parts and IMO it is obvious he is getting a little more of his way when it comes to editing because stuff is getting a little long.

Honestly though, I could not be more excited about this series. Man I am pumped. I don’t get HBO so I’ll have to wait until it comes out later but the series has definite potential.

    re: HBO: Game of Thrones

Full disclosure: I'm a George RR Martin fanboy. My favorite author behind Neil Gaiman.

I've read Game of Thrones three times and the others in the series twice. I could not be more excited for the HBO series, or A Dance with Dragons (book 5) coming out in July.

    re: HBO: Game of Thrones

Here's a preview of the first 14 minutes of the HBO episode for those that are interested.

Game of Thrones: Watch the First 14 Minutes - TV Preview at IGN

I'm currently working my way through A Feast for Crows. I've really enjoyed the first three books but I'm not quite sure what to think about this one yet. As for the HBO series, does anybody know how HBO distributes their shows? Are they available for purchase on iTunes or Amazon on a weekly basis or do they not release them until the DVD/Blu-ray release? I don't currently have HBO and have considered adding it to my cable lineup just for this series but would probably prefer to just purchase the episodes themselves if that's an option.

It seems like HBO waits and releases dvd/blu-rays after the season is over.

The books are magnificent. Not everyone may be into fantasy books, but they are IMHO just fabulous. The worst part has been waiting for the author to get the latest book completed. One good thing may be that he is heavily involved with the production.

    re: HBO: Game of Thrones

I am excited to see GRRM's world come to life. I'm too cheap to shell out $16/month for HBO so I'm not sure how I'm going to watch it yet. I may have to wait until DVD.

And I pre-ordered my copy of A Dance with Dragons today.

not only that, but HBO usually waits until a month before the next season for "buzz." True Blood DVD comes out in May, new season June. Six months is a long time to wait for something when they are on the new extended seasons.

I found A Feast for Crows a little off, but I think that is just because it and A Dance With Dragons were supposed to be 1 book, but since Martin wrote so much, they got split into 2. So, you didn't see some characters in A Feast for Crows, since their parts are in A Dance With Dragons. Also, all events in A Dance With Dragons takes place at the same time as A Feast for Crows, since it was all supposed to be one book.

A Feast for Crows was bad compared to the first 3 volumes. I think this is due to two things. The first is, as you mentioned, that this concentrated on only a subset of characters. It just happened to be the characters that were fairly boring (with the exception of Arya). The other reason is that Martin originally had planned on skipping over this time frame and he probably didn't have quite as strong of story lines for it.

With that said, I fully expect A Dance of Dragons to kick ***.
