    Don't be too surprised...

When the Cyclones struggle heavily at times. The fact is still there that in November of last year it was obvious that whether or not we had the best coach in world, it would still take approx 3 years from that point to build up championship worthy offensive and defensive lines. We will be going against units that have lots of depth and experienced starters with talent. It is not rocket science.

Man start having some positive thoughts. If you listen to JP this is not the Cyclones of old. If you want to think this is the way it has always been then nothing will change!

negative Rep level.......How the heck did you do that?

    Re: Don't be too surprised...

You know if you go back and watch the Nebaraska game last year... how big of a talent difference was there... not much... 2 huge missed calls in the second half cost us that game... Blythe touchdown... Flynn catch... huge calls that didn't go our way. I truly don't think we are as bad as the record proved out last year... some bad play calling and possible quiting on the teams part down the stretch... colorado..

2 years removed from overtime in Lincoln and the big win at A&M. I'm excited for the new season and how come Koch ran for 170+ yards... maybe because we ran straight ahead with a line that had some beef but not made for sweeps and pulling guards... ran it up the middle with our only option left a fullback turned running back... hoping their was some bad coaching and playcalling last year and that the cupboard is not empty and a quick turn around.. is possible.. any thoughts out there to the same ?

    Go Clones

    Re: Don't be too surprised...

Ok...so you may not like what the poster has to say. I know...it's a few days before the season starts - we're all supposed to have great thoughts - roses and daisies.

    Facts.

    - We needed late-game heroics to defeat the likes of Toledo, UNI and UNLV last year. We won just one Big 12 game.

    - We were one of the worst statistical teams in the Big 12 last year (the worst in many). To boot, we were near the bottom in the country too - bottom 5th in a large number.

    - We graduated some key people on a bad defense and most of our poor offensive line.

    - We scored a meager 5ish points/game in the 2nd half last year (excluding garbage-time points).

    - Our defense routinely gave up touchdowns at the end of the first half.

    - Despite what many would like to think, the Nebraska game wasn't near as close as the score indicated, poor calls or not.

    Now...having said that...

We do have a new staff that is very tough, disciplined, detailed and determined to win. For the first time in a very long time, a decent number of our players pass the eye test. However, our talent level is still not on par with the rest of the Big 12.

I do expect improvements this fall, I just know it will happen alongside some bumpy times, things that will take time to iron out.

That doesn't mean I'm any less excited for Thursday to arrive or my views will impact my devotion to this team and level of cheering.

Hey, I agree with you. It'll be a few years before we're truly competetive. I expect big things in 2009 - 8 home games and no TX or OU. Need to make some noise that year.

I am pretty sure that Gene knows, even though he won't admit it, that he is going to watch helplessly many times this Fall as his team gets run over by somebody better.

It's a process, first the teaching, then the recruiting, then more recruiting, and then, even more recruiting. If done successfully, then we should see some results in the first couple years with how competitive we are. Then, maybe 09, you get that breakthrough year.

I agree that 2008 and 2009 will we much better with Chizik recruiting and coaching these kids, but we DON'T play 8 home games in '08 or '09 - as of right now we have 7 home game in '09, the Kent State game is an away game...sadly, idk we have to go play there.

We have to go TO kent state? Who was in charge of that scheduling? That had to be BVDV.

I bet after 2003 people thought that the '04 and '05 seasons would be a wash too, but I liked how that turned out, oh so close.

Yeah, but 04 and 05 benefitted from a decidedly weaker Big 12 schedule. However, A&M was pretty good in the south in 04, and OSU was ranked #25 when we went on the road to face them.

    Anything could happen.

People automatically assume that since our O-line and key players from a bad defense last year are gone that its going to get worse....if our D and O-line were bad last year, maybe its a good thing to get fresh bodies in there.

I'd like to be pleasantly surprised at how good this team is once they start developing players and executing the fundamentals during gametime.

While talent-rich teams can still run you over, player development and fundamentals will win, most of the time. I want to see players tackle. I haven't seen good tackling in the entire McCarney era.

And if we do that, we will win.

We graduated some key people on a bad defense and most of our poor offensive line.

How much will those players be missed? Our pass defense was one of the worst in the country, that and an underperforming o-line should not be too hard to improve upon. Throw that in with new coaching philosophies, and hopefully, more imaginative play calling, and I don't see how we can't be better.

    Re: Don't be too surprised...

At this point, why be realists???

This is our time to envision incredible success, to dream the dream.....Give it a chance, how else do teams have dream seasons, or break-out seasons....When Joe Tiller first went to Purdue, they had decent talent, but Tiller fired them up and got the most out of his team (Its called Coaching). Again when Mike Leach took over at T. Tech, good talent, but, his system and energy earned a few wins they should not have won based purely on Talent...

One other big factor in comparing last years team to this years team, have we really had an O-Line coach since Steve Loney? And all spring long the lone comment i kept hearing was about how ripped and in shape our team looks - i think this is a direct correlation to coaching and assembling a staff that knows how to excel....Thats what we have - don't take that change for granted.....

For you posers already giving up on the season, stay at home, wait til 2009 to show support - thats what homers do.....

I will be excited, and on the edge of my seat watching a spread offense put up a lot of points thursday - mark my words.....This 10th best defense in the country thing is purely based on them playing in the MAC - that defense would be 110th if they were in the Big 12......

    Prediction : ISU 42 Kent State 17

    Bass 2 tds
    Robinson 1 td
    Bylthe 2 tds
    Franklin 1 td

See who else can jump off the negitive bandwagon and if nothing else at least hope we do better then 4 wins.....

    K
